Hi,

Just about to pop into my local T-Mobile store as I received a text from them yesterday saying I could get a new handset as I have been with them for 17 months now.

I have a Vario II just now but I think its time to move away from a Windows based phone, I just don't use half the things on it anymore.

So looking for a nice modern handset that isn't quite as much as a brick as the Vario II is.

Looking at what T-Mobile have on offer, I'm thinking the LG Renoir will fit the bill, the alternatives would be a Pixon or C905.

Read some reviews though and apart from the lack of a jack plug for headphones the only thing that concerns me is that over and over again I see "the sound quality of calling isn't great".

This concerns me, some folk are claiming its very quiet and muffled. Also that the ringtone and volume even at its highest setting isn't loud enough.

Is this correct?.

Well, sat here this afternoon humming hawing about what to get, read more reviews and comparison websites and eventually got off my backside and went into town.

Just returned with an LG Renoir. :D

I had a look at the Vario IV as I was still tempted to go for a Windows Mobile based handset again, but I was surprised at it's size and weight. I expected PDA phones to have moved on and got a lot slimmer and lighter than my Vario II but it still looked like a bit of a brick.

Played with the Samsung Pixon and it was a really nice handset but still couldn't decide. They didn't have any Omnias so couldn't go the Samsung WM way and unfortunately they had just sold their last Renoir.

So they called up the store in the next town and they found one there and reserved it for me to go take a look at.

Nipped over and played around with it for a bit and eventually decided to go for it. I dunno, I just prefered it to the Pixon.

Incidentaly, before all this when I first went in, they called up customer services to check what was available to me as a free upgrade. And the result was pretty much any phone in the entire range including the G1 ( which I looked at but really didn't like to be honest ).

Mind you, when I first went in I told the woman that Orange had offered me some brilliant deals on free handsets as a new customer and that I was very tempted but wanted to see if T-Mobile could do the same as an upgrade?.

I'm also a business customer, dunno if that had any bearing on what they can offer you. I guess competition is fierce these days and each provider looks to keep its long term customers as best it can.

Anyway, back home, got the footie on the telly and the phone and instructions out. Fiddling around with things it looks like it will take some getting used to over the Vario II, but so far I'm quite pleased with it. :)

Love to see a little mini review of this fella. Been considering one myself.
Ive got a TyTn II atm and want to move away from Windows mobile.

Post up your thoughts after a bit more usage fella, I'd appreciate it. Id be particularly interested in the web browser and battery life..!! :D

im up for upgrade also with t mobile and the LG Renoir is what i have my eye on.

well im shocked to find out it has no jack for headphones.

does that mean you can not listen to music via any headphone type?

this would be a deal breaker for me as this phone has everything i want but what i want most in a phone like this, and that is the ability to listen to music/radio via headphones.

maybe stereo blue ooth audio?

i was just a second away from confirming this phone as my upgrade choice with t mobile until i read the above.:(

Sorry, should have made it clearer regards the headphones and jack plug, at the time I typed that first post I hadn't got the phone and the info about the headphones was something I read on the web. Now I've got the phone I know that not to be the case. ;)

It comes with a set of headphones which are actually pretty good quality.

The first part of the wire plugs into where the phones USB cable or charger plugs in using an LG "proprietary" plug. This then runs a few inches to a clip on to your lapel type volume control which has a standard 3.5mm jackplug connector in it which you could fit any headphones you fancy to I assume.

The ones supplied are of a good sound quality though. If you are going into a T-Mobile store ask them to let you have a look at them and all the rest of the gubbins in the box, they won't mind.

I can post a pic if required, I intend to do a wee mini review of the phone since there appears to be scant info on this model on this part of the OcUK forums. :)

thanks for that , well its no different then than my k810 with sonys propriety connection , so on that basis i am going to order it later. looks like a very good handset.

i can get this phone for free if i take another 18 month, so ill be asking for a reduction in my bill or ill go elsewere. cant see that being a problem, they have done so before.

No probs m8.

Yeah, I was a bit slow off the mark on that one, should have asked for a reduction in monthly price plan payments but to be honest, they adjusted my price plan last month and gave me a free USB wireless dongle with unlimited access. Dropped my price plan by £10 on my main phone and the wireless dongle access is included, so can't really complain. :D

You will get the Renoir for free no bother at all if your signing back up to them for another 18 month contract. As I said earlier, they pretty much offered me any phone in the entire range for free and I could have got one of the new Blackberry handsets or a G1 but I decided I wanted just a phone with a half decent camera on it instead of another PDA type phone.
