depends what hard disk your defragging i would assume. If your defragging one your using then i guess no, but if your defragging say a storage drive and all you want to do is surf the net while you wait that should be alright i think.

it's perfectly fine to do. any files in use, however, will not be defragged/moved.

I use multiple drives for everything so I happily defrag one partition, play games off another, convert AVI to DVD off another, send a video from another to the TV for the wife to watch and download my torrents onto my download drive and I nver see any slowdowns at all.

Had I tried this with only one or two drives then I might have to adjust my ways.

So, you will be fine even on one drive, but you must be aware, that the system will be a little laggy, and any files that are in use will not be defragmented

I run a scheduled de fragmentation of my main hard drive every week whilst I'm still using the computer. I've never had any problems myself.

this is what i do..

disable system restore, and clear out all restore points
run ccleaner
run o&o defrag

i'll listen to music & use firefox when defragging

It is perfectly safe to use your computer whilst defragging and here's why: All defrag programs use the same 3 NT kernel calls to do their thing - which means that it's the core of Windows NT (or 2k,xp,vista,2k8,7 etc) actually moving the bits around the disk - which it does completely atomically (it doesn't mark them as moved until they actually are physically written to the new area of disk).

Yes, it should be okay to use the PC while defragging. One thing to note is whether the defrag program is efficient...it should recognize resource usage and back off, otherwise applications may stutter, and also some of the files may not get defragged.

I've played Fallout3 with Diskeeper 2009 going full blast on another drive in the background. Not a single problem! DK's algorithms are awesome and use only few resources...I always leave Diskeeper in autodefrag mode regardless of what I am doing on the system.

Problem is, Diskeeper Corporation are a bunch of raving lunatics - I'd rather castrate myself with a rusty spoon than line their pockets.....
