Planning to order my pc for a build at half term (depending on when windows 64bit disk comes)

looking at:

e8400/e5200
Biostar P45
4GB OCZ 6400
Tuniq tower
Western digital 500GB
Case undecided may be a p180 (£75) or Lian Li
Vista home 64 (waiting for the 64bit disk to come ordered today)

Atm i have a 19" 1280 x 1024 but also have a 26" display downstairs that i will use know and again. In future 2-3 months i will be upgrading my screen to at least 22" most likley 24"

1) Do i just go for a 4850 at the moment?

2) Go for the XFX 4870 offer

3) Wait too see wif there is going to be any great deals on GPU (anyone from OcUK want to give me the heads up :D)

Thanks (woops thought this one in general hardware)

SAPPHIRE HD 4830

Hey lynchy6789,

not sure how serious a gamer you are but the HD4830 can be had for a great price!

It's not a card that appeals to an ePeener or proper HD-Pro Twitch gamer but at just over half the cost of the HD4870 it's offers a huge amount of Bang-For-Buck!

Two or Three months down the line there may well be some new cards knocking about that make the HD4870/GTX260 look bad (and cheap!).

Make of this opinion what you will however this forum is becoming rampent with GPU testosterone atm that has nothing to do with gaming and more to do with ePeen! . . . It's like a game will be unplayable or laggy if you own anything less than a HD4870 or GTX260/280! :o

Hopefully I save you some cash to put towards something else nice! :)

Thanks for the input didnt think of that may be i should go for this and e8400 then upgrade later when i got to a 24" check in genral hardware i posted my 2 specs but that is good thinking .

The only game interested atm are Left 4 dead, BF2 and FSX

Play more for fun, not interested in clans or anything, bit of time to waste bewtween 7-9 when nothing on TV and no work to do. First build very excited =]]

just looked through the news and i can't see it mentioned that the TWO is now no more.

NO MORE THIS WEEK ONLY OFFERS. Our long running This Week Only offers announced every Wednesday are to end and will not be replaced. The present offers will expire tomorrow and the This Week Only page will be no more. However, the spirit of This Week Only will continue with amazing offers made available every single day which will last for as long as we have stock at that price. Why wait until Wednesday when you can save today? Read about our latest deals right here.

I would. Thats a great price and definatly the fastest card available for the money.

The only thing is make sure your warranty is with OcUK ! The last time I had to RMA a card with XFX the experience was so bad I wanted to fly over to them and high-five somebody in the face.

will that price still be the same tomorrow?
Hey don't sweat it lynchy6789, your the one with the money so it's up to the sellers to entice you!

The longer you wait the better the deal will be, and of course new GPU's will arrive so just ask yourself if your gonna get good value from the HD4870!

Just double check with yourself if you really really need to spend that much on a GPU to have fun playing computer games? . . . personally I don't think you do and instead your seeking some nice retail therapy and a little ePeening also! :o

Anyway don't rush to purchase hardware because as soon as you do an even better offer is likely to come along!

Spend as much as you need but also save as much as you can . .hehe! :p

ha ha ha ha i think your right. I just want to build it over half term:D.

Just wondering if the XFX 4870 is an offer GPU or not?

As if it isnt i can wait and see what else comes up!

May be a 4850 with E5200 and biostar is the best option

This will give me nice results at a lot less cost, im not the one whos bothered about there PC constantly being able to max everyhitng.

Also if i save money means i can go Leeds fest this year anyone been?

ha ha ha ha
Heh don't get me wrong, I think the HD4870 is a nice card, the only thing I don't like is its power-draw (hint= Two 6-Pin PCI-E power plugs needed) and its price (£170-£200 approx).

When the HD48xx series was first released (4850-£120, 4870-£170) it seemed like a no-brainer to me and I purchased the bang-for-buck HD4850, most other forum members (ePeeners/Pro Benchers/Gamers) went for the HD4870 which I guess isn't a suprise!

These were the benchmarks I based my purchase on and it was the first time ever I made a conscious decision to *not* buy the best and instead save some money and buy what I actually needed! :o

I game at 1920x1200 and have done for the past few years and can tell you although you do need a decent card you certainly don't need to spend every last penny you got to sit back and be *wowed* by the graphics and enjoy a all night gaming session!

Looking at the bench results above do you actually think its worth paying the extra? . . . as in once you start gaming do you think you would notice the difference? . . is it worth the extra expense when instead you could save some money towards somnething else like a new Full-HD monitor or TV!

If you are one of those types that don't upgrade very often then there is some sense in paying a bit extra but in reality the newer cards that will arrive in a few months should be good enough to get the whole forum "itching" for a graphics upgrade (again). It's easy enough to sell on a used graphics card if its in good condition so basically just buy something you need now and for the next few months!

Anyways good luck and I hope you get to enjoy some gaming soon! :)
