not sure
hi all ive been very lucky to have been given an asus striker extreme mobo,4gigs of ram,an ati x1950pro all i need to get is the cpu and a few other bits and bobs.

i want the Q6600 cpu what i want to know is how well do these mother boards work with trying to over clock cpus do they have enough optoins etc allso whats the chances of me NOT getting a q6600 that wont clock to atleast 3.2ghz i dont want to get the one they say will clock im gonna go for the cheaper oem Q6600 as ive got no moneys hence why ive been given most of it :).

thanks all

p.s allso whats the best air cooler at the moment keeping in mind the price and im allso gonna over clock the bugger.
p.p.s i do have some experiance in over clocking as me current rig (no taking the p@ss) abit nf7-s 2.0,amd athlon mobile cpu clocked to 3200+ speeds,7600gt agp gpu etc etc so im not a total noob tho as you can see have been out of the game for a long time.

allso what is the nm of the Q6600? this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-172-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=

Q6600 is 65nm. If you buy one of the OCuk Guaranteed overclock ones, then you should be guaranteed for it to clock by that amount. I've got the newer batch ones, and it needs around 1.58/1.6v to stay stable at 3.6Ghz. Which is a hell of a lot more than some other people can run them. For cooling I am using a noctua heatsink, with 2 120mm fans in a push/pull config with a third noctua fan sucking air right out of the case 2cm away drom the second cpu fan. In an Antec 1200 case. I'm getting 75 degrees Intel Burn, but around 55 during gaming.

65mn why was i thinking they where 55nm?.

oh well ok so seeing me old spec going from that to this will be a HUGGGGGEEE jump would it not?. allso do u recomend the Q6600? or would u say save a bit longer and get somthing better?.

If you can save enough to buy an i7, then I'd say go i7. Failing that, I'd say yes, I'm very happy with my Q6600, even though it doesn't clock half as good as I wanted it to. I don't know if you'd see a HUGGGE difference, as I don't know what your previous spec was. :D

Sorry, missed that. I wouldn't know, haven't owned that combination of stuff. I'd say it would be a fair improvement yes. How much, I cannot say. You could as I said go for the guaranteed to clock chips, but they're quite a bi more expensive, might be worth considering 45nm?

allso im thining of lapping the cpu as me m8 got one and he did lap it to he said it was surprising how far out it was any thoughts on that to :).

what power supply would u lot recomend to.

I have the striker extreme motherboard, and despite reviews I have read on the net, it has worked a dream for me. Overclocking is fantastic on the board, you can overclock the RAM separately to the CPU, its simply amazing. Plus, its got nice blue LED's on it :D

As far as overclocking the Q6600, you won't have a problem, the board fully supports it. Apparently it doesn't overclock as nicely as the dual cores, but you can probably do well with a decent cooler. Myself I'm using the Zalman CNPS-9700LED, looks nice with all the copper on the board!

Oh one last thing, first thing I would do when you set it up is over volt the RAM. Once you start overclocking, for some reason it likes to BSOD if the voltage isn't high enough. Mine is at 2.0V, the voltage was at 1.8V

Any problems, let me know.

Have fun!

my bad i mean i know what vcore means i wanted to know what it should be set to? whats std

To get my dual core to 3.0Ghz, I haven't had to over volt the vcore at all, its still at 1.35V

But obviously the quad will need more voltage, so I'm not too sure about that. Its just a case of getting the FSB as high as possible (in small increments) until the system becomes unstable, then you need to increase the voltage, obviously keeping an eye on temperatures.

Umm, my spidey senses of *Destroying CPU at ludicrously high vcore* kick in here.

Please dont say your running it at that 24/7

No, my temperamental striker II extreme has decided to go into a phase of corrupting my hard drive after failed OC's. I've clocked back down to 3Ghz. It just need to much of a voltage jump to run any higher. I found out yesterday it need 1.52 to stay stable at 3.2. I'll just call it good at 3ghz now and start using my pc instead of constantly benching it and squeezing every single mhz out of it. :D

Basicly, if you start your machine and you don't get the Post Beep and you check the little display at the back and it says "CPU INI" then erm your buggerd,

Most of the time i turn the power supply on and off and it works fine again, but about 3/4 times i had to take my PC appart, clear the BIOS (switch jumper press button take battery out for 3 hours) and it worked again.

Other then that i have no problem with it :)

These boards are a bit hit and miss, some people are lucky and do ok with overclocking, some people have had nightmares. Mine wont go above 3.0 gig with a q6600 at any voltage, even though the same CPU did 3.8 on other boards.
