Hi guys

For those who live in the area, I'm currently helping with the planning of a "gumball" style route for a university rally and I was hoping that I could get some feedback on what are good roads in the South Devon and Cornwall area. I know that Dartmoor is awesome fun as I have been across it a couple of times myself already, but otherwise I was hoping to pick up on some fun little roads further down from there. We intend to end up in St. Ives but the route can go more or less all over Cornwall so any ideas would be fantastic. Thanks for anything in advance!

Cheers

I have to agree with Logsi though, loads of the roads in Devon and Cornwall are good.

I'm intrigued as to what roads you would use, and the route you'll take over all. :)

It is a nice sweeping road (I get off at Roadford :D) but it's not really all that good a driving road, although the lack of speed cameras between Exeter and Launceston is brilliant.

I also love Sourton hill, heading West, reach the crest, nail it down the hill and go flying off down the straight after the little corner. :D

Between Falmouth and Helston (A394) is an excellent road. Only single carriageway but it's usually quiet outside of rush hour (as long as you're not in tourist season) and it's a brilliant road - undulating, excellent views, good fun.

Truro to St Mawes, Have a cream tea, then St Mawes to Falmouth via King Harry Ferry. Some nice driving n great views.

WHAT!

A30 is amazing! Get off the M5 and you have lovely sweeping A30 all the way home! I love it!

...When there's no traffic on it. The last couple of years I down there we got stuck in ridiculous roadworks and/or silly traffic jams. We'll be avoiding it for sure.

Thanks for the suggestion that could fit quite nicely into the plan!

Great suggestion cheers. My only reservation is that the last couple of events went over the ferry and I'm keen to organise a different route to the past ones to spice it up a little! Keep 'em coming though. Cheers guys!

I'd love to post it up, but there are some sneaky ninjas in the engineering dept who will be looking for clues on the route and if I put it up on the 'net it ruins the event a little. The idea is that you don't know where you have to go until the morning of the event! Makes for interesting routes!

Fair enough. when are you planning on doing it? July-August-September will be a horrible time to do it as all the roads will be full of tourists.

Go from Exeter to Plymouth the most direct route rather than over the A38. It takes you via Princetown on Dartmoor. The roads vary between tight and twisting hilly roads to open sweeping moorland roads. They are fantastic.

can agree with that, just mind out for sheep and ponies also occupying the roads ;)

Truro to St Mawes (the long way around avoiding KHF) is a very good drive, used to do it on a daily basis living in Portscatho and and was always fun when no-one is on it!! (a3078)

The A38 when it is dead can be a laugh, missioned up it on boxing day at 4am and didn't pass a sole, managed to get to my flat in plymouth in well under an hour from portscatho.

Driving from newquay following the north coast towards padstow is also another good drive (b3276)

from a30 near fraddon heading towards truro going down to brighton cross round-about and passing laddock towards probus is another good road to drive along (B3275)

to many roads to name....
