As above. A friend has a Mac but all her college work is done on a PC. She is thinking of putting office 2008 on the Mac. Are the two compatible.?

Nearly all my stuff is done on the Mac (I'm a tech architect) and of course everyone that I send my stuff to is on Windows.
There's rarely any issue - the only time I have had issues has been with some larger documents (think 1000 pages plus) that had an issue with formatting. Even then just saving as an older version, openning that, and then saving again as the current version solved it.

There might be one caveat on this - not sure when the versions changed this, but new(er) versions of Word save as .docx - which is not readable on older versions of Office. This has been causing headaches at my office, which is based on Win2K, Office 2000 installs.
I've not had enough of a go with Office 2007 (reinstalling it as I type) to see if you can change the "save as" format (I'm sure you can) but it might be worth bearing in mind if you are using 2 versions of Office at home/work/school - as far as I remember, this is the first time such a problem has occured with incompatabilities.
I know you can get software to view .docx files if you are running older versions of Office, but our Stasi-esque admin policies allow no such tomfoolery.

You can, you can set .doc as the default format in each app so even if you start a new document it'll be in .doc. Just in Word Options > Save. People who complain "I always forget to save it in .doc" or similar quite frankly need a slap since the option is right *there*.
OOXML is a seriously better file format than the Office 2003 format, it's just that Microsoft is using it to peddle Office 2007 which is why most people hate it.
But to answer your question: Yes, 95% of the time.

Just in case you aren't aware, there is an official MS patch called the compatibility pack that will allow older versions to read docx documents, no third party tools required:

You're right, it doesn't support VBA.
That was the bit I was thinking of - unfortunately our crap IT support haven't bothered to sort this out, will pester them for this ASAP. Cheers for the link!
