explaining god to a 3 year old

So it;s ok to kill people if you're disappointed in them?

Is god going to kill me, or you and mummy?

Are you and mummy going to kill me if i do bad at school ? :(

I highly doubt a kid will ask questions such as these, but simply think of something or lie:

God was hurt by the behavior of people.

No of course not.

No you can't kill people ( read story about moses to kid and the 10 rules).

In the bible, God kills lots and lots of people, including little children. It's okay though because he's perfect and unknowable. Also he can't interfere because of teh free willz. Except when he wants to. Or some kids call some guy bald.

Ahh the foundation of all good parenting.

Lets face it, everyone gets lied to in their early years, Santa Claus brought you some presents. Easter bunny blahblah. If you don't do this the police will come and get you.

Well at least my parents alway used to scare me with the police :D.

[DEVILS ADVOCATE] You could argue that to fall into the group that call themselves "christians" it is a requirement that they follow the teachings of the bible. [/DEVILES ADVOCATE]

You can follow the teachings of the bible without believing a word of it. The actual message is quite a good one in general (only some of the specifics are really problematic). Reading the bible itself you can see that Christ himself useses metaphore and allegory quite a bit, it isn't a huge leap to think that God does the same in His message.

I would argue that to label yourself as a christian and yet know that chances are if a God existed, the bible should not be taken literally, is incorrect. You are a believer, but certainly not a christian, thats something very specific and defined.

I am sorry I do not follow your logic here. To call yourself a Christian you need to believe in Christ and that the stories about him are true. That does not mean you have to believe in the totality of the bible as quite a few of the stories in the bible are not directly related to Christ. As Christ himself useses both metaphor and allegory it can be seen quite easily as a method that God employs. You could also quite rationally think that Christ existed, his teachings were correct but that the bible is not the whole of the message.

BUT, simply by having that knowledge that his rules are in fact still just beliefs, rules out the possibility that they could be a true believer in God, as they would also then have to apply the same logic to their belief in God.

Any scientist that has a true understand of how science works would know that you cannot apply it to the existence of God. You are using the wrong tool for the wrong job. Personal faith in no way gets in the way of following scientific method.

Who's to decide which parts of the bible are allegory and which aren't? I could say that the bible in it's entirety is allegory.

That is pretty much up to the individual. But it does tend to be relatively obvious. Remembering again that even Christ himself used allegory and metaphor in his teachings.

How can one chose to believe that Genesis is allegory, without conceding that the rest of the bible cannot be taken as factual?

Faith?

With this argument in mind, how can one call themselves a believer in the christian faith, when they believe that the only prose may be a fallacy?

Because there is a difference between fallacy and allegory? If you believe in Christ and his teachings then that pretty much makes you a Christian. Obviously a KJV Christian would disagree ;)

but all those things have an expiry date where you're expected to grow out of them/find out they're false.

But religion people carry it on forever.

Errr not in my experience, as I said I was religious until about 13. My mum is catholic and my dad an atheist, they sent me to a christian (protestant) school to which I went to from 4 to 12. As soon as I started becoming older ( well mainly since I learned about other religion at school and had biology, physics and chemistry at school) I made up my own mind and my parents let me.

If you believe in Christ and his teachings then that pretty much makes you a Christian.

Do what now?

I believe that a guy named Jesus lived, and was a relatively nice guy. He probably knew some groovy card tricks or something, and helped old ladies cross the dusty roads. I believe that his outlook and morals were something that we should generally try to have ourselves.

I do not however, believe *in* Jesus Christ, son of God, saviour of man, water-walker.

Am I "pretty much a Christian"?

No because you don't believe in him as Christ, Son of God.

Amusingly there is exactly the same amount of evidence that Jesus existed as there is that he was the son of God. (i.e. The Bible) you just choose to believe a part of it and then criticise those that believe more of it. :D

Wait til he's older to decide if he believes in a religion and if he does which one.

Explain like.
In the story of the bible, baring in mind it is purely a story, god was a non descript thing, kind of like a man which can see, hear and know everthing, wierd i know, which created the earth, of course in the bible the earth was said to be flat, when we now know it's clearly round, then he was said to create men, and then a rib woman. Believe what you like son.

Something like that, i don't think we should speak down to children or force views on someone so vulnerable, let him make his own decision based on what he knows.
My parents christened me and I wish they hadn't, i would have objected had i been able to, i think religion and cult are the same thing, a cult which i do not wish to be a part of.

Well its more plausable to believe there was once a good man named jesus who helped people and portaid a possitive message. Compared to the son of god moonwalking on the water and getting everyone wasted on wine.

The part that I choose to believe is that whoever wrote the bible, referenced real life.

Much like if I were to write a story about some hero, I'd base the hero on an exxagerated version of a real life person.

All fiction has factual basis, in as much as the author's ideas will relate in some way to their experiences.

1) Can snakes really talk?

2) then the snake turns in to the devil what is the devil?

3) why did joesphs brothers try to kill him for his coat?

4) did cain try to kill able (vice versa?)

5) why did god kill everyone apart from noah?

1) Yes. See Walt Disney's Robin Hood.

2) The Devil is someone who sometimes appears on the telly; his real name is Robert Peston.

3)Not so much for the coat, it was the recipe for Cremola Foam in the inside pocket that they were after.

4)Yes. He also shot J.R. Ewing and was the gunman on the grassy knoll.

5)Stovepipe jam. Whilst God was busy trying to clear his weapon, Noah hoofed him in the pebbles then made good his escape in a floating zoo.

Should put your young lad off the scent for a while.

Different interpretations of the same evidence though. Other than the bible there is no proof that Jesus existed at all. Yet you choose to believe that he did and discount the rest as fabrication. You take his existence on faith but not his divinity. It is just as plausible that he didn't exist at all and the whole thing is made up. A Christian just takes his divinity on faith too.
