3GB or 6GB with i7 920?

You need to appreciate where you are looking. In CPU-Z, it will give the base frequency, which should be doubled, however, in the BIOS and the program being used in the screenshot it is showing effective frequency. The memory multiplier gives it away - memory multiplier x BCLK = effective memory. In his case, CPU-Z will read 500; but he is only showing the SPD tab, not the memory tab.

Have you actually looked at the page you link to? Unless I've missed something obvious, he is running a BLCK of 200 with a memory multiplier of 5... the memory is running at 1000MHz (i.e. half it's rated speed). FAIL!

Someone please correct me if I've got this wrong!

He's running a mem divider of 2:10 but since it's ddr, it's at 2ghz effective. I doubt he'd be running his dominator gts at 1000mhz.

screw it, ive just thrown caution to the wind... after reading this thread and doing some research ive just ordered 3x2GB 1600mhz... even though i already have 3x1gb, im just going to try and flog them and cut my losses... i'll worry about my bank balance when my credit card bill comes through... i must promise myself no more money to be spent on my pc for at elast a couple of months!

That's an impressive overclock. You must have an extreme water setup.

I have a watercooling setup, but I think I'm more lucky with the chip, to be fair. I have a "B" batch CPU and it seems to manage quite well. The 4.4 with HT and turbo on was for overclocking purposes (should really change my sig). For 24/7 I have it as turbo on and HT off at 195 BCLK as the temps are quite nice and the volts are pretty low and it doesn't seem worth pushing it for the extra. I'll probably try and raise it with better settings this weekend.

Please let us know what results you get if you do.

Also, you are right i'm reading more and more that it's a lucky dip with i7 chips if you get a good overclocker or not when you are trying to push the 4Ghz barrier.

Just checked the box, its batch 3838B079, if that helps at all.

I think it really depends on what applications you use, however, I am running 4GB right now and 3GB is already used up, so.. i don't have enough RAM! :)
6GB would satisfy, but 12 would be awesome.

finally got my hands on a copy of Vista 64, cant wait to see the difference between the 2.

i think my CD key should work, as its my work colleagues Vista 64 and im going to use my key... i reckon it should... although i had an awkward moment when he gave it to me, i said 'thanks a lot man your a life saver.. how much do you want for it?' to which he replied 'huh?' then i said 'vista 64...' and then i realised he meant to just lend it to me, i got conufsed when he said 'you can have it i dont need 64'... so ims till gonna have to send the government some money to get my free copy of 64 bit Vista! (you have to pay tax to claim your 64 bit upgrade)..

all i need now is to upgrade my RAM but 6gb or 12gb? and 1333mhz or 1600mhz?.. i believe i cant run 6x2gb 1600mhz with overclocked i7, so i guess its 1333mhz with the future to slap in 12GB or just stick with 6GB of 1600mhz for ever... god dammit nothings straight forward.

I think that what you really pay for is the Activation Key... as long as that is legal, you are being honest in my book, even if you borrow the DVD for the install. However, only Ultimate (and maybe Business) keys work for both 32 and 64 bit... and if you have Ultimate, you typically get both DVDs in the box.

Do you know how many activations you are allowed with Ultimate ?

I have a legeit copy of Ultimate (OEM) but to get my copy of 64 bit Vista i need to pay taxes and shipping and MS will send me the disk, so my key is both valid for 32 bit and 63 bit so it should work. To my knowledge the keys arent specific to the disks but they have to match the server at MS, thats why you have to register it online, and it checks it against your mobo or something... so im pretty sure i should be fine.

its not like DRM in games where you get 3 installations or some crap, especially when the software costs like £150... you can install it as many times as you want, im sure it ties it to something like your motherboard or something as a safeguard against you installting it on multiple PCs....

well, ill let you know this weekend if my key doesnt work...
