Looking at the moment at "Sams Teach Yourself Visual C# 2008 in 24 Hours: Complete Starter Kit", as twenty four hours seems a short amount of time to get to grips with the basics!

I've only (shamefully) used ebooks in the past, and have always given up almost as soon as i pick something up, buying a book and having something that i can read away from the computer will be a big plus for me i think, and thats why i'm going down this route.

I've had a hard time deciding whwat type of language i wanted to learn and have been torn between C# and PHP. I have no idea which is more useful or desired at career level, although i imagine after picking up and learning one language, moving over to another will be fairly simple, as the basics will be the same just with a different syntax?

I do actually plan to leave the job i am in now and head to university in the next year or two, to do computer science of some sort - and i wanted to get a head start.

Suggestions people, what shall i do? I'm terrible at making decisions!

If you want job opportunities, then C# is a no-brainer.

If you're learning it for personal use, then it depends what you want to do. PHP for web development; C# for anything else (though ASP.NET is a pretty well respected web framework).

As for books, I can recommend Programming C# 3.5 by Jesse Liberty.

No not really. Apart from the tools you may use such as C# Express, etc.

Then i shall take a look at what it says about both suggestions and order which seems most suitable, and download Visual C# Express, and wait til it arrives - lets hope i stick to it this time!

Any other suggestions are welcome, i'll hold off purchasing a book til tomorrow as it wont arrive til friday either way :)
