explaining god to a 3 year old

I dunno, i find paganism fairly easy to understand and i'm technically not an adult.
Of course i do have a few pagan freinds to explain it.

Also, what is so important about someone believing in god?
It doesn't add any moral fibre to their being, just a bit of blindness to their beliefs.

Paganism as a broad concept is fairly easy to grasp (Polytheism) but it's so broad a definition and has so many sub-groups it really does become complex. After all what us the difference between Shamanism, Wicca, Druidism and so on? :)

Anyway I'd give my child a broad understanding of all religion then they can choose or not based a good understanding and no brainwashing. They'd still need faith but you cannot teach that! I explained faiths to my son & he's Agnostic, the wife is an atheist, and I'm a complete Pagan whack job. Fun

My son even at 3 isn't really buying into the whole god thing I can see his skepticism when explaining it to him.

Anyone else had to deal with questions like this?

How about you tell him the truth "There is no God".

Tell them the truth, that different people believe different things and everyone (atheists included) are unable to prove any of them, it's just a matter of faith. Explain what mum and dad believe to be true, but also that other people also believe other things.

That's the most honest and reasoned response.

You don't have kids do you? The number of "But why?" you would have to answer in all that... :D

Show him this.
Its about god, kinda.

Tell him God is something that can only be experienced and not leanred.

And teach your son to meditate so then he can experience God/Enlightenment for himself instead of having relying on skewed descriptions from religious beuacracies.

You won't get many serious responses here. But if you believe in God then I'd tell them your beliefs. Obviously keeping it more simple. You could say you can "feel" God's presence, but don't say that unless you believe that yourself or you will just confuse him. Basically just tell him what you believe, but simplify so that he would understand. Also semi-pro-waster mentioned leaving out the old testament, I disagree, there are some great stories in there, don't miss them out if your going to read them to him. Good luck :)

As it gives people a rounded up bringing and generally means they aren't stupid close minded like a lot of this forum. Is there any need for such hatred against religion..

This is one of the truest things I've read for a while. It always seems like religious people are a lot more open minded than those who are not or at least those who are "anti-religion", even though people will try and have you believe the other way around. All to often I hear people condemn the Bible as some old book with no real truth in it, but they haven't actually looked into it at all other than perhaps what a few fools like Richard Dawkins have said.

I love arguments where people think that being liberal makes them more intelligent or puts them in the right.
I especially love it when people think that because they don't believe in god it makes them more intelligent. 'Religious people have lower I.Q.' I mean when someone says that to me it makes me think that it is they who are of lesser intellect and are trying to demonstrate that they are more intelligent or more intellectual.

This seems to basically be what is happening in this thread.

No, no it is not and I could even use this statement as an argument as to why somebody who has a scientific mind could NEVER be a true believer in a higher power.

Clearly your not a scientist, since there is no such thing as a "scientific mind". So thus your whole argument is flawed. Someone who has been taught the basic principles of science will think things through more scientifically. People are not born with some kind of natural understanding of the scientific principles which they then must compulsively apply to al aspects of there life.
