High pitched noise coming from my PSU...and I think my motherboard might be dead.

Today I noticed that my PSU has been making a high pitched whining noise when the switch on the back is on (doesn't matter if the computer is on or not). As far as I know, this has got something to do with the capacitors right? Well, I think it's safe to say it needs replacing anyway. However, even with this noise I still should be able to boot my computer shouldn't I? When I turn the computer on I don't get a picture or any beeps - the fans spin up but nothing happens on screen. Does this mean the motherboard has gone too? Is there any way for me to check?

My spec is:

Antec SmartPower 450W
E6320
Gigabyte S3 P965
2GB GeIL PC6400
6600GT
2x 500GB HDDs (Seagate 7200.11 and WD AAKS)

Thanks

First of all unplug the Hdds the dvd rom(s) and any non essential components.
Then see if the pc boots.
If not try with one sick of ram.
If thats dosent work then take out the graphics card to see if you get any beeps.
If all else fails try a different PSU or if you can a different graphics card

edit : might be a long shot but also try to reset the CMOS jumper.

Memory and non essential components didn't make a difference. No beeps with the video card out either.

I don't have any spare components to test unfortunately. I already tried resetting the CMOS also.

Nope, if it's whistling, chances are its toast.
RMA the PSU & hope it didn't take anything with it when it expired.

Cheers

PSU died and took nothing with it? I'm glad that on occasion the rest of the system survives, I live in fear of my psu killing everything in the box without warning

If those CWT made Fuhjyyu time bomb Antec PSUs always killed PC when dying there would have been huge amount of dead PCs because of popularity of those PSUs and cases with them.

Yeah. The Sonata II is a really nice case though. :p

I don't think it fully died anyway, it didn't like pop or make any loud noises or anything lol.
