Hi,
A friend of mine is looking to buy her boyfriend a home cinema package to go with his newly bought LCD & Blue Ray player. What she was basically after was a Samsung package along the lines of a Samsung "All in one box" type solution that you can pick up in most stores for a couple of hundred quid, but without the DVD player as he already has a blue ray player. I'm a bit unsure as to whether what she's after really exists, so thought I would put it to you guys.

  • Should be compact, e.g size of a dvd player, not a full size seperate AV amp
  • Should be no more than £250 including speakers
  • Ideally Samsung

Basically the following unit, just without the DVD drive. Sadly sound quality isn't really the driver here, is more about "keeping it matching"

Yamaha do a pack for around £200 thats well regarded for the money, and it's actually a receiver / speaker pack, not a stupid propreitary system.

AVOID the samsung, philips, panasonic etc setups that are sold on the highstreet IMO.

You'll need to spend a good deal more to get HD audio from the Blu-Ray player though.

Maybe I didn't read the brief fully after all that though lol.

Check online for a "package" rather than home cinema kit, unfortunately all the Samsung packages seem to be DVD player/amp in one jobs.

Sod keeping it matching - you'll find you 6 months down the line that you can't connect <insert something here> because your "home cinema system" doesn't have the correct input. Try something like the Yamaha pack.

The Sony HT-SF1300 is a really nice system. Got one myself jsut over a month ago and it's really fantastic in my opinion.

It's not Samsung, no, but it's just an amp and not dvd/amp configuration. The only thing I do not get with my BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player and the HT-SF1300 configuration is decoding for DTS-HD/MA which, to be honest, doesn't really bother me as the DTS core for that still sound brilliant.

but he doesn't need the built in DVD player, and I agree, buy a package of separate but ,matched amp/speakers, rather than an all in one box.
