Im thinking of getting a PS3/360 now that PC gaming seems to be nothing but shoddy console ports..:(

I know the 360 has a very good online infrastructure for gaming/marketplace....but at a cost.

But what is the PS3 like?...

Are there plenty of servers, are they UK specific, are they laggy with high pings etc etc...?

Basically for gaming online (not bothered about extra things like marketplace) is it comparable to the 360?

Is it worth paying for Xbox live with a 360 or is the free PS3 as good?.

Thanks for any advice..

In before all the cheap people get here...

Got both, use both reguarly etc.

If your willing to pay for Xbox Live it's by far the better package, the structure of the PSN regarding friends, invites, chat etc is way behind XBL.

As above I own both consoles.
The 360 is just so well designed for online play and gaming that I never feel like I am paying over the odds.

With my PS3 I feel like the whole online experience was an afterthought - I would happily pay if they improved the service to XBOX levels. It feels like a homebrew bodge to me right now... And HOME is great for 5 minutes and then becomes a wasteful joke.

- I do love my PS3 for single player or spltscreen though _ IF only they could sort out online!!!

ive only played gran turismo prologue online and that was truly terrible.
couldnt choose a server to play on
baby mode catch up was enabled
at times there was a fair bit of warping when cars collided
playing on the same server as ur friends was lotto
there was no in-game chat
u were promptly kicked out of the game as soon as the race ended..no well done..haxors...will get u next time banter.

im bored now so im going to stop typing and leave this thread

You see, im not really bothered about stuff like that....

If i got an online shooter that has come out on both formats, would the 360 version be better than the PS3 online in terms of server availability and low ping rates or does Sony at least provide quality servers.

I use both regularly and the difference is night and day. Personally, I think that 28.50 for 13 months of live is good value and I would happily pay that to Sony if they could provide a similar standard of service :)

The PSN isnt bad though. The service is perfectly useable but in my opinion, its just not as good as live.

Not sure why your are confused? All Sony PS3 games use dedicated servers thats why Resistance can have 8 player co-op and 60 player online with hardly a hitch.
If all you want to do is play games online with mates then i dont see there being much difference between the two, its the extra little things the make XBL better.

I've just played 2 hours of Resistance 2 on line, best experience I've had online with a console.

Congratulations, but that has nothing to do with the network what so ever. If Resistance 2 was cross-platform, I'm sure it would be as good on both consoles.

Its not really fair when one is paid to compare them, but what I will say is that the PSN store on PSP is very impressive. I think it should get more coverage.

I think the Xbox does have the edge by far in the social aspect of it all, and appears to have far more content.

Seems PS3 could have so much more which could boost it's rankings - I mean the simple (yet awesome) idea of original Playstation titles that are about £3.49, it's great! they work on both my PSP and my PS3, I have about half a dozen on my PSP that get played to death. Why aren't they releasing more quality older titles? There are probably a good three dozen I could rattle off right now that could be popped on the store at £3.49 - £4.99 and would make Sony tens of thousands, yet they put "Reel Fishing" on there, one of the worst rating games of all time - and trickle feed us.

Gaming wise - it is good for quick matchmaking. I have found that when being invited into a game it is wierd as I only notice when I have come out of the game entirely.

Konami has the worst mashup of trying to create an extra account in the world - made MGO totally not worth it, took me forever and a day to create that account.

I am a PS3 owner, by the way.

I think basically if you have a lot of friends who like to play online and they have 360's then this is where it's worth paying for LIVE. If you are like me and just play against any old random folk and don't really enjoy voice chat then PS3 does the job just fine so you dont need the extra invite functionality and stuff.

In terms of simply connecting to a random server and playing both platforms are pretty much equal with the PS3 maybe having a slight edge due to dedicated servers for its first party games.

For social gaming the 360 wins due to party play, cross game chat, private chat etc etc. I would add invites to that list but ive noticed since the in game XMB update for the PS3 a huge proportion of games are integrating it.

Sony dropped the ball to be honest by not forcing publishers to adhere to a unified community system for games from the start as MS did. As a result PS3 games, from what I've seen anyway, the multiplayer aspects are only as good as the developer who made the game.

Tekken 5 DR Online for example has the most woeful multiplayer service I've ever seen. If I want to play a game with a friend I have to send him an message, wait for him to join (all the while having no way of communicating with him unless he & I have a headset or talk on the phone), etc. If I see him playing it I have to message him asking him to invite me otherwise I can't join (or find) his game, etc.

Xbox Live just looks so fluid by comparison.

(PS3 owner btw)

The PS3 seems to have the far better network infrastructure than X360 - pretty sure thats what the OP was asking...

ps3ud0
