Hi,

We never had pets as kids  mean, cruel parents! :D However, now I have moved into my own apartment (split level), I'm looking into the ethics of having a cat, that I would essentially want to be purely for indoors.

Is it ethical, or is it cruel? I really don't want to have to come home to a goldfish, and boys are terribly untidy..xxxx:rolleyes:

nothing posh about a maisonette ;]

what are you on about is it ethical!
yes you can have a home bound cat. just be wary of open windows.

it's a cat, if you were considering hitting it in the head with a spade, then I'd say that it was ethical.

Sure we have a house cat. He's more than happy indoors... mainly because he's scared of the wind... but thats a different story. I'm not sure all cats are ideal to be kept inside a house though. Are you allowed a cat in your apartment? if so I highly recommend like my cat a chocolate colour point. (warning they do malt)

IMO, i wouldnt keep a cat inside, especially if its going to be there alone during the day.
I have 2 cats which do tend to spend around 80% of their time inside but they do like to get out in the garden to investigate the various smells and chase each other under the bushes.

There you go see, the early guys were so sceptical!

It's clearly their instinct to go out and delve about - I suppose I could carry it about in my handbag ala Paris Hilton and her little pooch!

I have a house cat, she has been out a few times but we live in a busy area so she doesnt get let out on her own!
She seems happy though :). You will need to entertain the cat more to make up for what they lose by not going out though.

I have 2 purebred Siamese cats. They are indoor only. If it were only 1, then I think I'd be a bit more hesitant to leave it inside alone....

They are the most amazing pets in the world, and I don't know what I'd do without them. Here they are as kittens :D

If you are out of the house a lot and you only have 1 cat then leaving it alone is no good..if there are 2 they keep eachother company. Or if you are home a lot then it;s ok as well.

A cat will go insane if it is kept inside.

Dont talk crap .

We have had many cats that were house cats . For many reasons. Excotic breeds or just afraid to go out . They have all been happy contented pets . Only issue maybe that you only have 1 . A pair would be better .

so, the basis crux of this is that it depends really on the cat, and the way you interact with it / them.

hmmm, food for thought - thanks for the help everyone..xxx

Check your breed, some breeds make much better housecats than others. Other than that, no reason why you can't keep a house cat.

ive got a house moggy. My mum took her in from a rescue center, shortly after having one of her hind legs amputated.....previous owners said she was hit by a car which was doubtful, seeing as the leg was the only thing that was damaged. And by damaged i mean destroyed - more likely she was abused which would gone a long way to explain her behaviour around males. Its taken her two years to get used to me.

but anyway yeah shes fine with it. she sleeps most of the time anyway, and hates the cold. i took her out in the snow last wekk and she did not like that at all :p

Most cats including our 3 here snooze all day. They rarely spend long out, little and often but that may be the dry food diet and the need to eat and drink little and often.

It's a fantastic feeling when you take in shelter animals and nuture them and see them learn to trust you and change. All of ours are from rescue or unwanted situations and become more and more attached to us all the time.

My next door neighbours got a cat that they never let out, its some sort of expensive breed one.

My cat hardly goes out, the bugger gets me up at about 5-6am to let him out, then he comes back in when i get up and sleeps on my bed all day. :D
