But that's a bigger cardboard box to start with :D

Either way wouldn't want to be in a crash in one.

Just to clarify some of the confusion here:

A crash into an immovable object is a perfect simulation of hitting another car head on.

If you hit an immovable object offset barrier at 40mph that's EXACTLY the same as if you hit another offset by the same amount with both cars travelling at 40mph. Every action has an equal an opposite reaction, so if you push into a wall it will push back with the same force that you are pushing into it.

Yes but the key is it's like hitting another object EXACTLY the same size and speed as you.

If you have an S-Class Merc that gets 5 stars, it protects you that well when you hit another 2-ton barge. You hit a little Clio in your S-Class, and you might not even feel it. The Clio, also a 5 star car, will have been smashed to bits.

5 Star big car > 5 Star little car.

Yes I agree that is a big drawback to those people who don't understand the system, but providing you do understand that I don't agree at all that the system is useless.

Big cars don't actually weigh THAT much more than smaller ones. Compare the weight of a 5 series to a Ford Focus....

BMW 523i 1545kg, Ford Focus 2.0, 1327kg.

I'd rather be in a brand new Focus than a 10 year old 5 series any day of the week in a head on crash.

The '10 year old' 5 Series you refer to is actually a Euro NCAP 4 Star car despite being designed before NCAP was really THAT important. Basically, it was strong, safe and solid enough to score highly without being designed to specifically pass the test. By contrast, your Focus was designed from the ground up to get 5 stars in the Euro NCAP test.

I can think of not a single situation I'd rather be in your Ford Focus than a BMW 5 Series and that includes a crash. Infact, I'd definately prefer to be in my 5 Series in the event of an accident. It's stronger, its better built and it has better safety systems.

It amuses me that you assume I'm talking about you. Hug for you, you must be lonely. x

the E60 5 Series went from 4 stars to 5 stars after BMW added a bong if your seatbelt isn't on. Pathetic.

They say you drive slower when your are under the influence of cannabis... :D

LOL, I see exactly your point, but the obviousness is, if you where to crash in the same manner as the NCAP test, i.e. immovable stationary object at the same speed, clearly, NCAP shows you the 5 series is worse.. so there's one situation you wouldn't really want to be in your car, unless of course you like to cut your nose off to spite your face ;)

Bigger engine in the BM though - and driver sits further back... I'd rather be in the BM.

And NCAP shows that crash it into something solid, and it doesn't fair as well..

I agree, however, that in some situations, the 5 series is going to be better, but when you see the fifth gear crash tests things aren't always as 'obvious'..
