Top Gear in fake Ferrari scandal

Controversy has struck Top Gear once again as it is alleged three 'Ferraris' that appeared on stage at a Top Gear Live show were fakes. Show goers at the Australian leg of Top Gear's international tour noticed something fishy about the trio of red Ferraris doing burnouts on stage alongside Clarkson and co.

According to attendees at the Acer Arena in Sydney, the distinctive V8 howl of the Ferrari 360 Spiders was drowned out by loud music and cheering, but the cars on display showed vital clues as to their authenticity (or lack thereof).

One keen observer, who refused to be named, noticed something different about the bodywork on stage, then saw the cars backstage with their engine covers up and noticed the powerplants 'were definitely not Ferrari engines.' The Top Gear Ferraris appear to be missing the distinctive air intakes above the rear wheels, with some alleging they are actually re-bodied Toyota MR2s.

The allegation could come at a better time for the Top Gear team, too, as it follows the emergency grounding of a helicopter carrying presenters Clarkson and Hammond in New Zealand. Nobody was injured when the chopper struck a seagull and had to land, but it seems Top Gear is having a bit of an unlucky streak at the moment.

Oh dear, I wonder if we will hear anymore, hopefully we can get some pics of these 'Ferrari's'

The question is, were they ever referred to as real Ferrari's?

If not, then I don't see what all the fuss is about. Much better to abuse three MK2 MR2's than to ruin three perfectly decent 'raris.

However given the amazing factual detail that article goes into, it is impossible to say one way or the other..

I thought the rebodied MR2s were quite a bit smaller than the real deal? Sure the anoraks would have noticed that?

They are pretty easy to spot (Though i'm no anorak :D)

Headlights are the main giveaway for me. There are so far back they are nearly in your lap!

And the length of the thing is tiny compared to an original.

This reminds me of the time my friend was bought a day's Murcielago track driving experience at Silverstone for two.
Him and his girlfriend turned up and they went through the safety things as usual, were taken to the cars, with the stewards/marshals bigging them up as Murcielagos when they were clearly Gallardos - Lamborgini's don't have model badges on the back either.
Because his GF had bought the tickets and was with him (and didn't know the difference), he didn't say anything at the time (since he still got to drive the Gallardo) but wrote to them afterwards and got a replacement day when they actually had Murcielagos.

TBH, I wouldn't be totally suprised. I love Top Gear and all, but I started taking it less serious about 2 years ago when I read from the owner of a Mk1 MR2 (who's car Top gear borrowed, upon request) that the Top Gear team had to run a certain race between the Mk1 and Mk3 twice so that the Mk3 could win (1st time the MK1 won).

who cares? would rather see 3 MR2's get wrecked, which they will do being driven like that, than actual proper ferraris.

One keen observer, who refused to be named.

What is he scared of, hammond and clarkson going round to his house and attacking him?
