What's Edinburgh like?

From what I remember when talked to the guy (who organises it) last summer he said he pays £800 a month in rent for a flat with 4 bedrooms. Guessing it will be fully furnished and near EH1 2EG (the office).

£800 for a 4 bedroom flat in the centre of town  We were paying £850 for a 3 bedroom flat as students ... and that was more than 15 years ago! That must be heavily subsidised. Fill yer boots :)

Edinburgh really is a nice city - stunning in places, actually - but it has many of the same problems as large cities so just be aware.

Someone else has already made the very valid point that if you're worried about being overrun by Scots, you have nothing to fear. There's a huge English (and others) population.

It's good but it's getting worse.

Lived in Edinburgh all my life, but now it's just riddled with speed bumps, speed cameras, traffick lights, the city center is riddled with no turn here and there and the whole city is dug up for all the tram works as well as other things dug up total nightmare if your driving.

The clubs have got a lot worse imo, I've been to every club in Edinburgh, it used to be great but now it's pretty crap tbh, base is the only worth while place, I used to be a cav (lavaignite) die hard but it's just a nightmare now, drinks shot up in price paying around £3 a bottle, ontop of that bouncers just being dicks in general.

As for transport I have a car and don't need to use buses, but suppose it's not to bad for the cost of a bus? Is it full of Scottish? what do you expect it to be full of? germans? Obviously it's a high perecentage Scottish but then your obviously going to have others there as well, theres a lot of foreigners.

In fairness you're walking across a largely deserted tree lined area which isn't particularly well lit, common sense would suggest that it isn't the best of places to walk through after dark anyway. That said I've ended up walking through there on many nights out in Edinburgh (it's vaguely on my way home) and never had a problem, maybe I've just been lucky though.
Well, yes. I've walked through it numerous times and had no problems also. Like most though I do know someone who was attacked. And when I said more attacks than you'd think, I meant every single night.

Weird, I think it is one of the better Wetherspoons I've ever been in (Falmouth might be better). It's huge, the prices are decent, it isn't usually a problem getting served and it's easy to find so for most people it is fine for a starting point. It's also almost certainly the cheapest place on George Street and isn't usually filled with overly pretentious people boasting about daddys wealth unlike quite a few of the other bars along there. The Grassmarket has a good selection of pubs too though with a bit more character if you don't like chain pubs.
:D

Best not get too hung up on yahs. Best to just avoid and ignore them. Some are probably full of it anyway - such as the unfortunate fool who embezzled university money to keep up with the Jones' a few years ago.

Just thought I would add one more post:
I got attacked on the Royal Mile...so isnt even that safe-outisde the world's end pub back in '06
but saying that during the edinburgh festival this year I dont know how many times I walked down there and never had any problmes

Absolutely gorgeous city. I visited it several times while seeing an ex and loved it. I missed the city more than I missed him. :D

Everything looks well cared for and the people are proud of who they are and where they live. The Castle looming over the centre looks amazing and almost eerie during twilight.

I would have no quarms about going back.

I did rather enjoy one time when a couple of Americans pointed at the church on Princes Street and asked if that was the castle. I had to reply by pointing past and above it at the looming castle-shaped castle...

The Worlds End Pub is well known for the Worlds End murders decades ago, it is also only a bawhair away from the cowgate, scene of numerous drunks and drunken escapades. Also only meters away from alleys and hidden stairways and dark underpasses.

It's a city! Every major city has problems. Relative to most other cities in the UK it's tame!

The buses have been pretty dreadful (Not been on one for a while) What with all the tram works in the city centre and loads of roods works at sheriff hall roundabout and roadworks in dalkeith (where I live)

Was almost in a fight there last saturday just because my hair is getting slightly on the long side :*( idiots

The trams will be well worth all the trouble when they're working though. A fully integrated Bus / Tram service will be great.

I used the trams in Dublin daily for two years and couldn't fault the service. Dublin Bus on the other hand...

I really like edinburgh, very clean, bus system is great (big distrupted due to tram works at the moment) and people a friendly.
I work in glasgow the now but i enjoyed my time off site at edinburgh (i live right between edinburgh and glasgow so either way is fine for me.
