Hello good chaps of OcUK!

After years of using various razors such as those by Wilkinson Sword (Diamond 3D, Protector, Quattro, Diamond FX etc) and less so Gillette (Mach 3 namely) and lots of different disposables, I got bored and fed up with them and paying out for the blades associated therewith.

My favourite of the above was the FX Diamond. The blades lasted far longer than anything else I've used, but they're now out of production which sucks.

Last year-ish, I decided that instead of going out and beating a grizzly bear to death with my bare hands, I should try cut-throat shaving to prove my manliness to myself. I bought a lovely little Dovo straight razor, which has a nicely embossed blade and is silly sharp. Sharp enough to cut right through the very fabric of time infact (possibly).

I convinced myself that something that is that sharp will shave me like a dream just by looking at it, let alone by using it. I was wrong - I had to use it. That's where the problems started. It took ages to shave just one cheek (FACE NOT ARSE) to a totally unsatisfactory standard. After several attempts over several weeks, I gave up with it and left it in the bathroom cabinet where it remains to this day. I can still hear the wife saying 'HAHA what a waste of money - I told you it'd be a waste of money'!

So anyway, I went on using my WS razors, and still was sick of them so yesterday I ordered a Merkur 33C, a trial pack of 35 blades (Merkur, Feather, Derby, Gillette et al), and some cream. I already have a brush and soap from my previous failed exploits with a straight razor, so I'm sorted there.

I've never used a safety razor properly (aside my Grandad's when I were a lad), so I'm not sure what to expect. I imagine it's going to take me a while to perfect my technique, but I'm hoping that with time I'll be achieving good results and saving money over these terrible mass-market offerings with wing mirrors, 47 blades and a giant ***** motor in the handle.

What do you lot think/use?

I had a Merkur Safety Razer for Xmas. The blades are that cheap in comparison to the usual alternatives I replace the blade after every shave.

Best Shave you can get and if you use a good quality face balm you will be fine.

Merkur 37C safety razor
Israeli blades
Pure badger hair brush
Soap bowl
Decent soap (at the moment Colonel Konk Lime)

£10 for 100 dual-sided blades (usually get 10 free with an order), can't go wrong.

Great shave, doesn't cut me and it takes no longer than I used to take with the Gilette. Just make sure to shave down, sideways and then against the grain to get the best shave. It takes time, but it's like anything; practice.

Keep the comments coming!

I've always had to shave against hair growth, I don't know why. I've tried working with it, but never get anywhere. I haven't a clue why though - maybe it's just the way I am, and something I can address when I start using the Merkur.

I use an electric shaver too. Obviously not as close a shave as with a razor, but I'm not bothered about that. Strangely I get bad razor burn with any kind of razor that I've tried, but skin is absolutely fine with the knackered old electric thing I mow my face with!

I've been using a cheapo WS DE razor since September, along with a trial pack of blades. It takes much longer than using a cartridge razor, I even began using shaving soap but to save time just went back to foam in a can after a few months.
I've cut myself a couple of times, more recently because I am spending less time shaving and just hurrying it. Proper slices about 1cm in length along my jaw line :\

I mean, it's great for doing your cheeks because it's flat, but as soon as you have to do the little awkward bits like your jawline, neck, bit under your lip, it's just nowhere near as easy/fast as a cartridge razor.

The only decent blades I've found are Feathers, 7o'clock, Gillette sweds, and Astra. (Feathers/Astra probably the top 3)

It is MUCH cheaper than cartridge razors though, I am still using my trial pack since September/October.

i use a merkur futur 700. im still on my first blade after 6 months of use. with the blades being soo cheap its already payed for itself next to my old gillette razors and it shaves far better as well.

Aye, it's good that it doesn't appear to be doing anything.

A few passes in different directions PRIOR to shaving against the grain will take off enough hair that can make all the difference.

I use a Mach 3 power thingy me jig but for the last few months I've been buying a 6 pack of Gillette disposable ones and they don't only last longer but give a closer shave as well, all for the price of one mach3poweromgzmarketinghypeBS blade

seriously, try a merkur lol

I use an electric one. Normal razors give me spots.

Sounds like your doing it wrong. Watch the Youtube vids linked in this thread and if you follow the advice I would be shocked if your still having problems.

The vast majority of the time you see shaving problems posted its poor technique and nothing that couldn't be easily solved if folk watched and learned from the mantic vids.

I use a Merkur 23C for my daily shave with Derby blades. I also have a WS Quattro for doing my upper lip as I find DE safety razors a bit useless for that.

A Kent badger hair shaving brush.

I usually go for Truffitt & Hill shaving creams and balms.
