Hey guys,

Got my driving test booked and ready for the 27th February. Booked it about a month ago or so, instructor recommended. Now, i am having it at Pontefract, if anyone else has taken one there.

The thing is, its not that i dont feel ready for the test, as it would be great if i passed first time, been round a number of test routes and mainly the ones where my instructor has had other pupils have trouble, ie, awkward situations.

The only "problem" that i sometimes have is that my general driving, bay parking (and all the rest) are great, but just last week i made quite a bad mistake that defiantly would have been a fail on my test. Which gets me nervous...:(

Im having a hour lesson with my instructor before the test so essentially 2 hours in total.

Just wandered if anyone else felt the same when they were taking their test and what you can do to stop it. :o

Any general tips would be appreciated as well ;)

Everyone gets nervous before hand but the hour lesson should help a lot with that. I managed to nail everything the lesson before and felt quite relaxed during the test. Just remember it's stuff that you have probably been doing fine for the last number of weeks.

Don't worry too much about it.

Remember, they have to fit 2 manoeuvres, show me tell me, roundabouts, general driving all into 30-40 minutes so it's not too much. It's not like they'll have you driving for 1-2 hours like you do in lessons :)

You pass or you fail, remember there's always next time!

I took 3 attempts. My first 2 were probably by far my best drives then, yet I failed on the smallest things each time. Third test was absolutely pathetic(even the examiner said it was fairly bad) yet I passed. It's just your luck on the day, I think.

Yep, it also depends on the examiners mood ;)

Exactly the same for me. Failed my first test with 1 serious and 3 minor (the serious was very harsh.) The second test i thought i had passed and again got 1 serious. Third test was in my opinion my worst drive by far and i actually thought i'd failed! Got back to the test centre to find out i'd passed!

As for the test i found it absolutly flew by everytime. Sitting in the waiting room waiting for them to call your name and meet your examiner is probably the worst bit. Once you set off it really does fly by, your back at the test centre before you know it.

Your really should check out this learner drivers forum if you haven't already, i found it a great help when i was learning to drive http://www.2passforum.co.uk/

Its a terrible feeling when you fail, but its all worth it for the feeling you get when you finally pass! ;) Good luck

Trust me, just stay calm during it, i got a bit worked up due to my instructor changing to a brand new car just 2 weeks before my test... took some getting used to a Focus over a Polo...

Thought i'd failed as it was a terrible drive, but found out i'd passed. Only to get on the roads and discover i was actually a terrible driver, 15K later and things are much better!

It's better if you try to break the ice with the examiner and have a bit of a crack on, i was fortunate and got a canny examiner :D

Thanks for the info guys, i was going to do my test at wakefield test centre but instructor recommended pontefract. Think he said there was a much higher pass rate, like 49% at pontefract and 20% at wakefield.

I pretty much fine manoeuvres, and roundabouts arent too bad. Though i must say, i hate mini roundabouts. Mostly due to the other drivers on the road.

Remember when you pass the real learning starts! They teach you to pass real world driving is a lot different to the test.

I passed first time got 3 minors, I had a horrendous lesson before hand, probably was the nerves kicking in! :D But once the examiner was in the car I was fine, oh and it goes so quick! My tip is to always listen to the instructor and ask him/her to repeat what they have said, they give you plenty of time when they say there instruction to actually carry out the manoeuvre.

Most important try to enjoy it :)

I passed second time, first time i drove really well but had one major, second time i drove TERRIBLE... and passed!

Is it worth stroking the examiners leg my mistake when reaching for the handbrake? :p

Jason Manford has a great routine about taking his test. He said:

I was coming down to a junction, you know, and I was looking out my window down the road....and I asked the examiner "Is it all right on your side?"

He didn't like that.

:D

I do wonder how much of that is true - I was told the same when I lived near Pontefract a few years ago. I took my test once I moved to Doncaster and passed first time. My instructor, a really down-to-earth guy, said he thought that examiners everywhere had a bad reputation, and that if you drove fundementally well, they would be willing to overlook the odd mistake. So it proved on my test, twice I was very much on my way to speeding (heading towards 40 in a 30 and 30 in a 20) but was forced to slow down by traffic both times. My examiner gave me a fair old telling off for this at the end of the test, but passed me because he thought I was a good driver. I've no doubt that so much of it is down to luck.

I completed my test about a year or so ago.

A lot of people told me that their driving test was one of the most nervous experiences they had. Complete toddle.

I was a bit nervous, but it wasn't that bad at all. Get some good sleep, eat a hearty breakfast and chill. Worst case scinario if you fail you can retake soon after. Job done.

Good luck!

Failed my second test yesterday. Was perfect other than I misjudged how fast a car was going and pulled out in front of it, causing it to have to slow down, although not to a massive degree. A little harsh, but fair enough.

Failed my first on Tuesday. Everything was going great until literally the last 20 seconds before finishing, when I made a 'serious' error. Damn. :p

As for bay parking which someone mentioned, I never got to learn that.

Some test centres don't test it, as they fear pupils learning it will clog up local car parks. This is the case with the Tunbridge Wells Test Centre :)
