I'm currently looking to get myself either an EOS 450D or 1000D (still undecided), so I thought I'd check out my local (indipendant) Camera Shop here in Swindon..

I wandered in to the shop after checking out the BIG players (you know who!!).. wandered round the shop and got a bit confused.. I went to the dSLR section.. found Nikon, Pentax, Olympus even Sony & Panasonic... I couldn't see any Canon Bodies or Lenses...

I went to the counter and asked if I'd missed the Canon display or summut, only to get the answer "We don't sell Canon, there dosn't seem to be a market for them!".. I stood there dumbfounded!!.. looking like a goldfish at him..

I just turned and left.. I mean in what world can you not sell any Canon EOS cameras.. they'd sell more of them to budding dSLR converts than they would Sony or Panasonic (as they're not really SLR's).

Seems a bit Dumb to me!!.. They're missing a massive customer base, especially in these tight times.. :o

Anyway.. Rant over...

Still looking.. and I still can't decide 1000D or 450D..

Sim. :)

They are as much a dSLR as any Canon. They make some excellent cameras and should not be excluded out of hand.

I agree with that. However, if that's what their experience has shown them, then who are we to question it? They will have done it for a reason.

450d vs 1000d boils down to

12MP vs 10MP
9AF points vs 7
14bit colour vs 12 bit colour
spot metering (center 2%) vs partial (center 9%)

personally, the extra £££ doesnt warrent the advantages, the sensor is still the same size and they use the same lenses, so quality is nigh on the same.

I didn't think they had a 'Pentaprism' in em... Plus I've got an EOS33v and Lenses already so want to stick with Canon..

Can't think of a specific reason that makes sense though!..

Simian - a lot of the lower end canon's don't use pentaprisms either. Imagine the low end SLRs of all manufactures might be similar.
They use Pentamirrors instead iirc.

Ooo.. I did not know that!...

Still want an EOS though!...

Drawn toward the 1000D with a Nifty!... (dunno if i want a Kit Lens though I've got one on my 33v)!!...

Is the Battery Grip worth the £100 or so they go for??..

Some people really rate the Grips - I had one in my original 350D bundle and didn't use it at all. I have since sold it and have a 450D, I have no interest in getting a grip for it at the moment, maybe once I have another lens or 2, and a decent flash.
The price of the grips is what puts me off, they're practically half the price of a second hand SLR Body. Considering all the really offer is a bit more battery life and a more comfortable grip if your shooting in portrait I personally think they are much too expensive.

have to say i had a 350d with a non canon grip[...hahnel]..which was quite a bit cheaper...but the camera felt more substantial with one...so would have to recommend one..but it boils down to personal taste.....plus with the mentioned grip it came with two extra batteries..so well handy for long shoots !

That is quite weird. If anyone asks me and their budget is below that of a D80/D90 then I nearly always suggest that they look at the Canons. Much better bang for buck than the low end nikons... It does depend on what lens route you want to take tho...

My local shop doesn't sell Canon either. I understand that it is tougher for a small independant to get a Canon franchise.

Now, if we suppose that Swindon store wants to sell cannon but cannot jump through whatever hoops are required, then it isn't surprising that they are dismissive...

Just buy a Nikon D40, unless you ahve some Canon lenses....:p

seems strange, considering they have other lesser makes like Sony etc. There are plenty of Canon only and Nikon only camera shops around though.

Very strange, I can perhaps understand why they don't sell Canon, because maybe they have some sort of supplier deal to not.

But to say there isn't a market for them is very odd.

im the manager of a large branded camera shop, and next door but 2 is an independant.

They don't sell Canon either, as they dont have the buying power to be able to go to canon direct, thus cant get competitive pricing so its not worth it.

They try and sell Samsung instead! Told one customer a Samsung GX10 was better than the 5Dmk2 he was considering buying from me....oh how they laughed!

Ha, makes a change. Normally if you mention Pentax (and that includes your employer Tom :p) people just look at you funny.......
