I wasnt sure if this should go in the Laptops & PDA forums or this one.

Iv got a brand new laptop "Toshiba Sattelite pro - P300 - 1EX with Windows Vista Ultimate (32Bit Edition). My built in wireless adaptor is using the Atheros AR9281 WLAN drivers. But the problem is it is diabolical.

Speed is rediculously slow (around 56k speeds) and pings to UK servers are topping nearly 600-700ms.

Does anyone know if there are any drivers around or is this wireless adaptor just carp?

:(

I have a Tosh Satellite, older model than yours, but my wireless is fine (still the Atheros hardware).

Only difference is that I am using XP.

Get decent speeds on my adapter so that will hopefully help you cut it down to Vista or the drivers.

Are you sure it is the laptop that is fault and not your internet connection?

can you do ping and tracert (via cmd prompt) to bbc.co.uk

Also, does your laptop have built in bluetooth. Disabling this can sometimes improve performance (FN +F8)

Its defenatly not my internet connection as I have no problems on any other machine on my home network through wireless, plus the laptop has been on several networks since iv had it and each result in the same poor speeds and very high pings.

It does have bluetooth, will give that idea a try tomorrow.

Thanks

Doing a traceroute shows that the pings are very high from the first hop onwards.

Defenatly not an internal wireless issue and defenatly is a wireless issue with this laptop's adaptor. Going to try and disable any bluetooth adaptors now.

tosh laptop here with xp same make of wireless and everything is fine

The people who dont have the problem seem to be on XP, however the people who are having similar problems seem to be on Vista.

There has got to be some sort of solution? I really can't be without this laptop for 1-2 weeks as I desperately need it for work however everything I have tried to date did not resolve the issue.

IF Vista seems to be causing the issue then it's almost certainly Driver related, quite often companies rush out drivers so their hardware works on Vista but they're hastily developed and prone to issues. Try searching for updated Vista drivers for the wireless chipset. Other than that, get a USB wifi adapter and use that. One with proven good vista drivers.

The thing is, Vista has been out for quite a while now, its not like its a brand brand new operating system. And the fact that this laptop is brand new should mean that the wireless adaptor inside SHOULD be Vista compatible anyway, and im not even running a 64-bit operating system but Vista Ultimate 32-Bit.

I'll have a little dig around on google later.

I dont mind buying a USB adaptor but I think its abit of a shame that I have to have loads of USB adaptors sticking out my already big 17" laptop just because the wireless adaptor inside is failing to work. I already have adaptors for USB Memory sticks and a wireless mouse, id rather not add to that with a usb wireless adaptor.

just because the laptop is new doesn't mean they'll ship it with the latest drivers for the hardware that's in it.

I'd check what chip it is then get the latest driver from the vendor site.

I do have the very latest drivers for this wireless adaptor, they were released January 2009 and it is compatible for Windows Vista x32bit.

I would suggest when you first start your pc to run netstat to see if you have any virus's or downloadeders running on startup

If anyone wants a fix for this then I have it.

Basically I had v2.5 BIOS installed, now this seemed to be the issue, basically I had to perform a BIOS Downgrade to v1.6 as v2.5 was originally developed for the Intel Wireless Adaptor and not the Atheros wireless adaptor.

A Quick downgrade to v1.6 resolved the issue. Wireless speeds now good and nice low pings :)

Thanks to Michael on here :)
