Water cooling vs Air?

in all honesty, the OP did state clearly in the thread title what it was about, therefore if you did not want to answer the question, you should not have clicked on the thread. Although i do see where both sides are coming from, and it was only advice you gave. Its infomation easily found, but we all ask silly/easy questions sometimes, and there are many different opinions.

anyway, that aside.

ive never tried watercooling, but i find air cooling more than enough for a pretty major overclock if done well. Only reason i would ever get watercooling is if i wanted to make my pc look seriously kickass, rather than practical.

im currently at 3.6GHz on a Q6600 using a Tuniq, which has only one fan that i cant hear. so, you dont need watercooling to get a good clock, although as i said above, it looks epic:D.

You have done well to get 3.8 out of a later model which by all accounts don't seem to clock as good as the earlier ones - nice one! Silence is something watercooling can provide if done right and using the correct equipment although there will still be some noise as you will still need fans for the radiator unless you plan on using something passive such as a resorator.

If you want performance and air cooling but are sick of the noise then try using a Thermalright Ultra with a Noctua fan or if price is an issue get a Xigmatek S1283 with a Yateloon SL12 fan. Both a very good aircoolers/fans in their own right.
Thanks w3bbo mate, im using a lapped TRUE black with 2x 2000rpm sharkoon silent eagles in push/pull (laped q6600) and a further 3 silent eagle 2000's in my case, 2xintake (1 in a kama bay) the botom of the case and one exhaust, all run off an akasa junior fan controller, i tried the noctua and it was garbage with my quad at 3.8ghz, ive posted my findings and prime stable clockspeeds in your database here on oc (nice thread btw) gonna get a q9550, fancy trying 4ghz+ on air:D

If you are so concerned why not stop bickering and baiting and answer the OP? After all you have had a go at me, at Mike, at the sticky. Let's see what wealth of knowledge you can provide instead of posting derogatory comments to fellow forum members.

Be careful up there, it's an awful long way to fall from your high horse.

If I recall correctly it was you who issued a curt and pointless reply to the OP, called him lazy, and tried to issue demands on how people should use the Forums (and the internet in general). Whereas I actually replied with some of my limited experiences on the matter.

Sound familiar?

The Golden 4GHz sure is a nice sweet spot to hit. Good luck and let us know how you get one.
4ghz would be sweet, im trying to break 20.000 on 3dmo6, the q6600 is stable as a rock at 3.8ghz, my xfx gtx280xt clocks to 714, 1251, 1504 on stock cooling, no evga volt mod used yet (just glad to get a card that plays cod4 maxed and clocks ok) concerning vcore on the q6600 would pushing to 1.55v on air be ok, probably just for a one of prime run.?

/sigh spitzoid I've had enough of your baiting now - welcome to my ignore list.

off topic, but do you run it at 4.1GHz 24/7?

thats a dam nice clock for a Q6600:eek:

and nice vids btw, both very good.

I don't have that setup anymore m8 but yeah it was run 24/7 (at 4ghz). I do a lot of reviews now so don't often find the time to make video blogs anymore unfortunately but I do have a (very kindly) sponsored WC rig build due to start in March where I have been requested to do another vid by the sponsors which I'll post here and on other forums. Hopefully this will help a few folk too!

I knocked mine down to stock last week, went to power on and we had a power cut. Luckily my 3.8ghz settings are saved in bios and wrote down as well, i could never run stock, the difference is to much.

Aye, anyone running a Q6600 stock wants there head looking at. Every one I had went past 3.6 with little persuasion with 2 or 3 hitting stability at 4ghz. I notice you've got a P5Q dlx too. Excellent choice and the best P45 board I have tested.

Thanks to you and cob and extreme systems, i opted for the p5q, i had an evga 680ia1 (supposed quad friendly board) it was bad, though it took my e6600 to 3.7ghz with 2x7900gt's in sli (needed a lot of vcore) unfortunately it died.
A q6600 should not be run at stock, (that is criminal) my sister has a rig with a q6600 and a p5q pro, cant wait to get my hands on it.

great - will look forward to it :D

where can i find your reviews of products btw? - potentially a stupid question, but im writing this as i think of it so havnt tried looking yet:)

I'm sure if you use the search function of the internet you will soon find out ;)

on topic:

Would i notice a big difference in cooling if i had water cooling opposed to 6 fans in a front/bottom to back/top cycle and a top rated heatsink and fan in my Cosmos S?

Idle not, load yes

Whats the deal with water cooling anyway? Is it safe?

Done right, yes

Are there non conductive liquids that can be used?

Yes

Also if i decided to use watercooling should i build it myself or buy a Kit? If a kit which kit?

Build your own

I don't know if the more experienced guys are interested in doing this but my reccomendation would be to somehow separate the water cooling advice in the main sticky into its own sticky and put "Watercooling" somewhere in the title. Novices could be forgiven to a degree for missing the main sticky as it does not actually mention water cooling in the title. Also, it seems the most common "offending" threads are the "SPEC ME! NOW!" threads, to which the first reply is often "Budget?!" So again, if the experienced guys can get together with say a "set system" for £150, another for £250 and so on and put that in a sticky, then the newcomers will have absolutely no excuse for posting spec me threads. I still class myself as a novice having only built one system, albeit a dual loop system cooling everything but the ram, hdds, psu and SB, so I personaly don't feel qualified to reccomend certain gear over another, I only chose the gear I did based on massive research, copious lurking and the odd targeted noob question, but I'm sure there are two guys in this thread who could knock something up? You know who you are :)

Unfortunately the OCUK forum settings only allow three stickies per forum and this one already has three. Whether they are the right three is another matter.

Perhaps the first two could be combined. Perhaps the Cooling one could specify that is includes water-cooling.

Perhaps people with questions could hit the search button first and then post a question.

So many options. Perhaps we should have a poll?

But seriously to reply to your post, Bubo, the problem with a set of specs at different price points is it simply can't be done. If you wanted to spec three different computers at different price points it would still be difficult as a computer can be used for so many different things. Now, compare that to the cooling options. Should both price points include a full-cover VGA block? Should they allow for expansion at a later date? Should the be aimed at performance cooling or quiet cooling? Should it be for internal or external mounting?

also the case they have comes into it, cant spec a nice PA120.3 or Quad feser for all cases, blocks are always dependant on socket size etc. Its why people really do need to read up on water cooling first before jumping in so they know what to expect, what they could achieve and get a basic spec sorted out, then ask the questions

Thank you so much to everyone who posted, the information has helped me out very much. Im sorry this thread turned into something it wasn't meant to. This is a fight that has happened millions of times in every forum that has ever existed "Noob Question" VS "Search Tool." Why should i ask my questions when with a little searching i could find the answers? A perfectly good sounding question though not without flaws which is why there is always a battle. If everyone went by that logic then there would be no need for this thread and no need for the thread posted last week that i should have searched for because every question that you could ever think to ask has already been answered somewhere, in fact there is no need for the overclockers forum because there are many other forums on the internet which deal with compters and overclocking too. If everyone thought like that there would be no point to anything. Why have wikipedia when you can read books? Why eat out when you can cook youself? You see where this is going. I understand this is looking at extremes but i think it highlights my point. There are obviously many reasons why this logic is flawed but my reason is that there is always new information to be heard. I could have searched for a guide written a while ago but there may have been new products brought out which i wouldn't find in that guide. That is why i asked because i wanted new information about new products. Theres always the fact that if you dont want to post you dont have to so asking an already asked question shouldn't bother anybody. Again thank you for the posts

I hear what you're saying but there have been a mass of recent threads about water and a little searching would have given you enough basic info to have asked better questions. And thus get more appropriate responses that would have helped you a lot more.
