Ok guys, i've been excited about phones in the past, but never like this. This is the successor to the original Omnia but couldn't be any more different if it tried. Main features:

  • Symbian 9.5 OS
  • CAPACATIVE 3.7" OLED touchscreen
  • PowerVR SGX graphics processor
  • GPS
  • 8MP camera (no xenon flash though:()
  • 720p Video Recording + video editing suite
Holy **** it's like all my telephonic dreams have come true and have been rolled into one device. Symbian goodness? Check. Capacative touchscreen? Check. 720p video recording? Check. Name me one single phone that even comes close to these specs that's based on the Symbian OS... or any other OS for that matter!

Sure... the 12MP SE Idou has been announced, but that's not going to see the light of day before 2010 from what i've read... and the OmniaHD is out in Q2 2009!

Only real negatives I can think of so far are that the battery life came under some scrutiny (thought I hear the final shipping version will be 1500mah) and only gave around 35 mins of HD video recording, and also no Xenon flash (a silly and glaring ommision to be honest).

Even so... this is vastly preferable to me than the Nokia efforts that are being released this year. Buy much? Think I might. :D

Its what the iPhone has,
windows phones are resistive touchscreen which means you can use your hands as well as a stylus but they arn't very responsive compared to capacative

Capacitive is best for situations that require high speed response and long lasting reliability. Information Kiosks, Point of Sales Terminals or Equipment Control Rooms. This alternative requires skin contact to operate.

Resistive is designed to allow items other than your finger to activate the touch. Area's that this type is suited to include Industrial locations where the user might be wearing gloves or for a physically challenged person that uses a Head Operated Mouse Alternative device. It also allows touch pens otherwise know as a Stylus to be used.

This fone has the possibility of me moving from nokia where i've been firmly camped for about 8 years! :o

Only time will tell...

TBH running Symbian is a pretty big negative for me, what's the point of such a great specced phone when the app support is so lacking.

Disappointed to see that HDMI has quietly been dropped from the handset.

@ban0: S60 has loads of apps. Got any specific examples of lacking app support?

For a start not all S60 3rd apps are going to work on 5th, and a lot of the ones that run will probably have usability issues. When I had an N95 8GB I found most apps online over priced, out of date or just shoddy.

That S60 OS looks awful compared to Apple's UI and even Palm's new UI.
Even prefer the look of my SPB skinned WM6.1 over that.

Have to say when I had my N95 8gb that the apps were a nightmare. Such as some apps not having the proper certification rubbish or installing fine and then just not working....

Have things moved on a lot since then?

S60 support lacking? S60 has TONS of apps, and the only reason the new version hasn't is because it's so new. Give it a few months and everything will be running on it. S60 is a fantastic OS and very "cheap" to run, I would not switch to WMO or Android as things currently stand.

Wow thanks for the great explanation!! :)

Looks interesting...i like the fact that it isnt running that POS WinMo OS but then symbian isnt much better either.

I'll keep an eye on this...currently looking for a second phone so might just wait and see what this is like.

I've got an iPod touch and a Nokia E71. The iPod touch certainly wins for games but Symbian has more useful and more powerful apps available for it. The fact it handles multitasking is a big plus and there's no restrictions on what third parties can do (i.e. turn-by-turn navigation).

Are you talking about current S60 phones or the Omnia HD?
