Need help on Zelda : Wind waker

I have just spoken to the deku tree, got the leaf that lets u float and gone outside. I fill up with magic and then float to the first island. I need to float to the forbidden woods but I cannot get there before my magic runs out. I try to go into the whirlwind and it lifts me up a lot but I still run out of magic.

Change the direction of the wind towards the forbidden forest so you float across faster.

Some online guides say this, but how do I do this??

It is a case of started the game over the summer and I have forgot where I am, how I got there etc etc!

You should have got the windwaker earlier in the game. Use it to play the wind's reqium (Up,Left,Right).
