Can you take your camera onto flights?

Excellent... If you couldn't then my other half would not take the D90 to Australia... No way is it going in her suitcase!!

on a similar note, if i take my camera as my 'hand luggage' I'm still ok to take a laptop in addition to this? As I'm planning on taking a trip down to london when I have a week off to take a few pics in and around the city as a change of scenery.

Yup, I've done it before and will be doing it again in a few hours :)

excellent. Thought you might be able to but wasn't sure as I've only had one or the other with me at the time :D

I had, my laptop, my pda phone, a PSP, the Wifes NDS, my 400D, 3 lenses, Video Camera and a pair on Binoculars in my hand luggage. So you should be ok :D

I've not had any trouble before, took my 20D and T90 with 6 lenses to Italy last year and had not trouble at all. Went to Spain the previous year with similar kit and got stopped on the way back to the UK because my films looked odd on the x-ray scanner. On the flight its fine to have the camera out and use it, even took a picture of the plane just after getting off at the airport terminal. I have also taken pictures of the planes taking off/landing through the departure lounge windows with no issues.

If you can, try and make sure your kit is packed into a camera bag with individual compartments for different things, it makes it easier for the xray dudes to identify everything. If its just a big jumble they may end up going through it by hand.

No problem to take any of it........ BUT check your airline rules for max weight and number of carry on bags and size. (Ie Ryanair one bag max 10Kg, BA is two carry on bags, EasyJet no max weight to carry on....etc etc.) If the bag is not to big or to heavy no problem.
Once flying out of Poland, I had to unpack the camera and lens before they were x rayed, so the guy could check them. Also had to remove the lens cap, and show it was glass inside, and not white powder I guess !!!...

Some German security person once took me aside into a room on the way ouot of Bremen. He swabbed the camera and lens for some reason or anouther. Didn't touch either of the other two lenses in my case though.

On the way out of Portugal they wanted to see all electronic devices working. Baring in mind this was the return flight, it was quite possible somthing could have been dead. No idea what happens then.

I got stopped in Sydney then taken to a room to be searched

The security woman padded me down then checked my camera bag and asked me a few questions, she then told me her husband was into photography and how he bores her with it, I remarked that it didn't sound like a good idea to talk her though my kit then, she agreed :p

Im so getting 2 Peli cases when I next fly abroad. One big one for checking in, and to fit tripod etc and one smaller one for camera body and small lenses. Then im going to use the larger Peli case as permanent camera storage.
