Summer car. Audi TT or Lotus Elise?

Sounds like you just want a car to pose in - perceived image seems to be a high priority.

TT for you then, if not a BMW convertible

For 8k I think I'd be looking at an MX5 myself. They're a nice compromise between the two.

I'd give the MX5 some consideration. Probably not as quick as the more powerful TTs, but it's designed from the ground up as a sports car. Not like the TT which share it's under pinnings with the Golf.

If you're looking for some other suggestions, how about a Volvo V70? I've had a look at Auto trader and you might get a 2004 car for your budget.

EDIT: Or if you want a proper left field suggestion, have a look at a Triumph TR7.

I'd go for an Elise. But I agree with most what has been said. I just prefer the Elise though, it's British, looks better, and generally goes better. It might not be quite as comfortable, but from my experience as a passenger in them, they are perfectly comfortable in my opinion, just not as luxurious as the Audi.

No, that's what you think, and if you're comfortable in thinking you're right, do so. I want merely a car to cruise long roads with the top down. Whatever person happens to be impressed with an 8k car, is off course welcome to do so, but won't be noticed much.

British? Completely and utterly irrelevant and would not have crossed my mind for a second, but now that you brought it up, I feel I had to get it off my chest.
I do agree that it looks quite good in a different way than your usual small type sports cars and will go and test drive one to see if the seating is really as uncomfortable as most people claim.

I was actually looking at the Volvo's just now and will certainly give it some thought. I really just threw the Elise and TT out there being some of the two most popular sporty type cars. Was also looking at the MG's and S2000's. I can probably stretch to 10k if I see something that I can fall in love with.

Last time I checked, Lotus were owned by a Malaysian company (Proton) ;)

That's just splitting hairs :D The cars are still made out in the Norfolk wilderness :)

As long as you don't have a bad back or whatever then getting in and out shouldn't be a problem. The comfort is surprisingly good... there aren't many cars where you can drive along with your legs fully stretched out and relaxed. The cockpit is cosy especially in the winter with the roof on and the heater going. The only thing that knocks points off the Elise for comfort IMO is the noise level on the motorway. As soon as you stray over 65 then you can't really hear the radio anymore unless you turn it up - but then when you slow down you get deafened by the radio :p The ride itself is not really any more jarring (IMO, less!) than something like a Clio Sport or MINI Cooper.

I was just saying why I'd prefer it. But then I view cars with my head and my heart, probably more with my heart. I generally find British cars make me feel prouder and I find most of them more charming.

I love how people are recommending old capri's and TR7's when the dude is thinking of a TT. Anyway i think you'd fall in love with the S2000, they'll probably hold on to their money a bit better now they've stopped making them. If you find the S2000 a bit too raw then consider an mx-5. I wouldn't touch the mg tf with a barge pole, its slow, dated and feels cramped. When i sat in one my knees were on the steering wheel and i'm only 5ft 8''.

The Trophy/160 isnt slow.

Supposedly quite a good car, but suffers on image etc
