General musing: what games *really* require high end gcards at the moment?

I only ask because I game at 1920 x 1200, and all the games I play seem to be handled really well by my rig (sig)...im running FEAR2 consistently well over 40fps, and I even managed Crysis with almost all settings at 'high'.

I usually do some upgrading around March time, but I'm just not feeling the need to hit my graphics at this time, and even if I did it would only be to something like a 4870 1gb.

What ARE you lot using those GTX 260s and X2s for??

Add AA and AF to reasonable levels and you'll find that your 8800GT starts to struggle a bit in some games.

Not to mention that some people will have simply gone from a card worse than your current one to a reasonably priced new-gen card.

I went from 8800GTS640 > 4870 1GB when the 4870 became available for £140. It was a good deal and in some games at 1920x1200 the 8800GTS just didn't quite cut it.

My 4870 heats my room up nicely during this extra chilly winter.

1920x1200 res, and pritty much everything hits my monitor refreash rate of 60hz (60fps). I will update to 120fps when i get 1 of those new 120hz monitors that are coming out :p

We are at a point now in pc gaming where there's nothing really that great on the horizon.

I advise everyone to stick with what you got or even downgrade the card and get an xbox 360 instead.

As far as I am concerned Pc gaming is at a complete standstill because of piracy, game manu's just aren't bothering with the pc.

Just look at the shoddy EA ports the pc gets look at streetfighter 4 delayed on pc and will probably have shoddy or non existant online mode.

Kof11 Fight night round 4 next resident evil the EA sports games and many other awesome games will all be on xbox.

Whilst the pc gets shoddy ports, this time next year the best game on pc will still be left 4 dead.

There's some great games for xbox 360 and many more coming this year, it's a no brainer really.

What have we got to look forward to on pc ? empire total war ? struggling to think of anything else really.

I use my 4870X2 for:

Brothers In Arms Hells Highway
Call of Duty World at War
call of Duty 4
Dead Space
Red Alert 3
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
Supreme Commander Forged Alliance
Tomb Raider
Turok
GTA 4
Mass Effect
Battlefield 2
Battlefield 2142
Burnout Paradise
Shellshock 2
Farcry 2
Mirrors Edge
James Bond Quantum Of Solice
Colin Mcrae Dirt
Race Driver Grid

Both Crysis and Warhead need top of the line cards to enable enthusiast settings at high res.

GRID runs at 60fps 1920x1080, ultra settings, 8xMSAA & VSYNC for me and never drops a frame.

I guess you can run it okay on lesser cards but obviously not running/looking as nice. :)

Which is his point, unless you're on a 30" monitor you can still get by with a much lower spec card. Besides farcry and crysis you could play all those games perfectly well on a single 4870.

Good for allowing us to save money, not so good for progression.

Not over kill on 2x22" though :P

Pc gaming has been going in to a coma for a while now.

Whilst I am not saying it's dead it's definitely taking a back seat for at least a couple of years imo.

My pc is more or less used for watching films downloading stuff and browsing, other than left 4 dead I cant get in to anything.

All the love and care and polish we used to see in pc games just isn't there anymore, it's in ps3 and xbox games now.

When i has my superclocked 8800gt i barely managed 21 fps at crysis at 1680x1050. Also dont forget some people might be running a lot of graphically hungry programs or just want to get a high score on the gpu version of folding @ home or have a monitor the size of France.

4870 1GB - bought it because it was reasonably priced, and my 8800 GTS 320MB was struggling in most newer games. The 4870 1GB gives good performance in everything (even Crysis, so long as you neglect the AA option), and probably will for a while to come. I certainly don't see myself needing to upgrade it any time soon. So basically my answer is, sure, I probably would have gotten away with just getting a 4850 or 9800 GTX+, but so what? This thing kicks butt! :p

Blizzard and Valve say wut?

C64 has got a point, but I'd still far rather play multi-platform games on the PC, due to the superior graphics/controls. Porting issues are often over-exaggerated. Piracy is also over-exaggerated. Game developers aren't bothering with PCs so much because every man and his dog has a 360 or PS3. Not because they are in any way the superior platform.

There's nothing I can think of in the next six months worth playing, which is a shame, but in the past few months we've had Left 4 Dead and DoW2 which will keep me going for a while yet.

Console are OK, but I'd rather have a smaller number of higher quality games.

As to the original topic of the thread, I've just downgraded to a GTX280, 'cos whilst the 4870X2 is an awesome card....there are only three games on the market that need its power...Crysis, Far Cry 2 and GTA4. Completed the first one twice, and the other two are poor.

RTS games simply dont work on consoles so the PC has a very nice niche. FPS games do work on consoles but nothing feels better than mouse and keyboard. There is a future for pc gaming once piracy can be curtailed. I would like to thnk Steam will have a point in this
