Now that I've sold my Panasonic TZ5 I'm back in the market for a new compact. Ideally of course I would like to go dSLR but with the costs ever increasing I've decided to get myself a top end digital compact instead. There are two that immediately jump out - the LX3 and the G10. Now I've done some research and they both have pros and cons. Having recently used and sold a Panasonic I know that the LX3 is likely a good bet, but I can't help but feel a lack of zoom would be an issue before too long. The G10 on the other hand appears to be the best of both worlds, but perhaps not quite as efficient in low light. It also scores slightly higher in the reviews I have seen. So what would your opinion be? My budget is £400 tops, an I need the camera and a 4gb memory card.

for that money you could have a Canon 1000D with 18-55 lens and I got 2x4gb SD cards too

for £339 all in

ah now that's put a cat amongst the pigeons.. :D

That's interesting. That works out slightly cheaper than the G10, although the G10 is obviously newer, and has the latest features, can the two be compared? The G10 is a nice all in one package though.

I think it all depends on if you will be able to spend more money on kit at a later date. If you will be able to get the aforementioned DSLR kit. If not it's going to be a bit limiting with just the kit lens, so I'd get the G10.

Depends if your are willing and have the means to spend more money later, but a 1000D or other entry level Nikon or Canon DSLR would be much better than a G10.

For 400 bucks you should be able to get an entry level DSRl, 4gb mem, kit lens and something like a 70-300mm sigma, all in you would have a much better camera, thats much more future proof.

Ta for all the replies. Granted, the dSLR will be the more future proof purchase, but will it fit in my wife's handbag :D

See the problem is, I had a 350D a few years ago, and that's what I am comparing every digital compact with now, so I am a bit spoilt in that respect. But I got fed up with lugging it around to be quite honest. And after reading the thread about 'how heavy is your camera bag' LOL that's sort of confirmed it for me. I will go G10.

The 1000D recommendations miss the point. The new G10 is small. It also happens to be very well featured - wide angle zoom and 14.7MP - but best of all early reports suggest image quality is outstanding. One reviewer was so impressed he said only his photographer friends could seperate its image quality from the 5D.

That's why I've just ordered one :)

You won’t be disappointed. :)

Here is another review: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/pocket-battleships.shtml.

It has just won Amateur Photographers “Enthusiast Digital Compact of the Year” award.

I got mine before Christmas as a backup for my DSLR because sometimes I get very tired of lugging around some of my kit. It is a fully featured camera, good range, 28mm – 140mm, built like a tank if somewhat heavy. The screen is very good, you can control almost everything manually and it has very good image quality. It suits my needs and fits in a jacket or trouser pocket.

I was lucky enough to get mine (£350) before the Canon price rises. :)
