Well i scored 61 on my Barb test and im currently wating untill tmorrow so i can go to the doctors and get my medical etc. ive been runnning around a mile every day for the past week and im hoping within 2 - 4 weeks i can be running 1.5 miles in 10 min. ive chose infantry then light artillary as my second choice.

Im wondering if anyone knows how long it should be untill i get to do my basic traning. and if anyone has any fitness techniques or tips or other things i should be doing. Also im going to go for the mercian regiment anyone here in it or thinking of going in ?

I know i have to do that 2 day medical assesment. Any thaughts ?

hope somone can enlighten me on a few things,

Andy

Run more than a mile for starters, Try running for around 3 to 5 miles. When you go to selection you do a 800 metre warm up then a 2.4Km run. If you're only running 1 mile your body won't be used to going further.
You should ask your AFCO/ACIO for a 3 month fitness plan, will help you get your fitness up in more areas rather than just running.

As regards to timing to get in, it can vary vastly. I've had my application going for over 18 months now(due to various setbacks, which have annoyed the hell out of me lol). As such I've had to do 2 BARB tests, and 2 Basic Skills tests. But now finally going to selection on the 3rd of March, and hoping to be in not long after that. But it could literally be anything from 2 days, to a couple of months, it all depends on how many people are applying to go for your trade/regiment.

When I first joined up a few years ago, it took me from going into the AFCO to actually starting basic a total of 2 months. I was unfortunate though and got Medically Discharged during basic though, that's part of the reason my current application has taken so long, extra medical and fitness tests etc.

Good luck with it all anyways :).

im shure for infantry its 1.5 miles in 10 and a half min. can anyone confirm ?

also im planning on running around 3 within a month but i want to get 1.5 miles in 10 min cracked down.

1.5 miles under 10 and half can pass with slightly longer though sometimes.

For all infantry it's under 10 mins 30 iirc, just trying to confirm now. But like I said, don't just try to get your 1.5 mile done in 10:30, just try and get some training in running further, and every now and then time yourself for the 1.5. If you only condition yourself for the 1.5 mile run, you won't gain the correct level of fitness. If you try and do 3 or 4 runs a week averaging around 4 miles, you'll be able to drop your 1.5 mile runtime much better than you would if you just trained for 1.5.

Yeah, just to confirm, you've got to get your run time under 10:30, 9:40 for Paras.
Be aware though that on selection this is a pass or fail test, if you're applying for infantry and don't get under 10:30 you WILL fail selection.

That said, 10:30 is a piece of **** really lol.

ye i see where your comming from

edit:// and yes lol i see where your coming from on 10:30 i can do that now i bet if i wanted to lol.

well i started applying start of september and i go off to pirbright for basic in april, definitly start running further, but dont neglect yor upper body/core fitness.
after i passed selection in november it took quite a while to get my start date, there were a couple of hold ups very annoying yes!!! but i took the mistake of taking it easy on the fitness side of things until i got a confirmation on start date(very very silly of me) and recently have had to work up my level of fitness again, only just now getting back to the same level with the running, but with much better upper body fitness than before, just remember its not all about run time you have to have an all round fitness, i made the mistake in training myself for selection really only focusing mainly on my run time, but i passed(not the point though)

for time wise it can be so different depending on how things go, but on average it seems to be around 6-8 months from first popping into the AFCO to basic.
but all you need is a slight problem to throw a spanner in the works, so be prepared to wait longer, but if you really want it then dont let another month or 2 bother you.

You'd be supprised how much peoples fitness drop in between ADSC and Basic starting. In the first week you'll be doing a timed run, just so the PTI's can asses your level of fitness, and we had some guys doing it in 16+ minutes, some not able to do it without stopping. Was shocking lol.

What you doing as? The way things are going for me, hoping to be in Pirbright at about that time, maybe before, who knows heh.

i'm going RA, light gun.
aye so i've heard, i'm not going to let myself be one of them, i'm determined not to let myself get in a position where i'll be struggling fitness wise.
Oath on the 7th april
basic on the 13th april

CANT ****ING WAIT!!!:D:D:D

Awesome. Good luck with it fella :D.

I've got selection on the 3rd of March, and Oh god I'm bricking it. Not had news from the army in ages, so I've let my fitness slip, been struggling with working 60-70 hours a week trying to find the drive to do training as well. Then all of a sudden get told to get to Liverpool for 1 30 minute interview(which is a pain as I now live in London lol) actually end up spending around 5 hours in the AFCO, and being told I'm on selection soon. Hopefully things will be ok lol :D.

I will give the same advice that i was given when i joined.
infantry sucks big time looks really exciting but you will get bored with the bull**** very quicky.
Join one of the corps (RE,REME,SIGNALS) You get a trade earn more and get promoted quicker.
Honestly ask the careers officer what other jobs you can go for but its youre choice in the end.
