Old RAM - can it be recycled?

Rather then just throwing it in the bin, there could be someone on the members market willing to take it off your hands for the cost of p&p.

How much of it have you got? What kind? If it is quite old RAM talking SDRAM why not donate it to your local school we can always do with donations.

eBay it, NASA are always looking to keep their machines in working order*

On the other hand, there are plently of people who still need old ram. Old Mobos are perfect for running certain DIY hardware and robotic stuff.

*This is true, I heard it on the interweb.

Recycled? Maybe by some kid in China smelting the gold off the contacts with no safety gear...

On the subject of geeky keyrings: I once had to saw a corner off a large SB Live card to get it to fit in a SFF case. It already had a hold in the corner, so I just made it a bit bigger, and it's been on my keys ever since.

It's a verifiable fact that NASA have been known to try various sources to procure components for old hardware, though I don't know if they've gone as far as eBay.

Random fact - The command and control software on the ISS was originally designed to run on IBM ThinkPad 760ED and 760XD laptops, which use up to 166MHz Pentium processors. They still use them, and they still need parts.

Yes ram can be recycled, and the company I work for does it. They can be completely re-used, have the chips removed and re-used or just be ground down to recover the precious metal content. All of which is done to our high safety standards.

PK!

I am sure some charities take it for 3rd world countries or if it's Crucial memory, they will give the organisation a credit for any old modules of ram you send back in when buying new ram.
