File full of passwords

I know it isn't the smartest idea, but I have so many online accounts including forums, steam, bank accounts, utilities, webmail, ebay, paypal etc that I am struggling to remember all the different passwords.
I usually resort to having the same password for a few accounts. So across around 30 online account I only use 3 or 4 passwords.

Is there an encryption software I could use, which is perfectly secure, so I could just make an excel spreadsheet or similar and write them all down. Or is that just a terrible idea all together ?

I have a notepad going back 6 years with vairus scribles down including login details lol. Very usefull, and only me will actually know inside the notpad which login is for which thing. Anyone else will just see my scribles and the odd doodle.

Have you tried out KeePass?

You can stick the program and data files on a USB flash drive if you want (there's also a PortableApps version), and you'll always have all your passwords handy with no risk even if you lose it. :)

/edit: darn, too slow...
 
Another vote for Keepass. Useful to copy pw/logins without even having to press keys, and then clipboard cleans after 5 seconds or so.
 
Keepass works for me, currently using KeepassX though which works on linux with the same database file!

There is even a mac version too :)

You could use TrueCrypt & make a secure 'drive' & store the document in there.

Alterntively I recommend eWallet - I've been using it for years and really like it. I've got hundreds of passwords in there :) - 256bit encryption as well so if somebody did get hold of it somehow they probably wouldn't have much luck cracking it.

If you want free/open source then go for KeePass as suggested above - I used KeePass Portable to store/access passwords at college - I prefer the eWallet layout though.

I also like eWallet's built in PassBuilder - I use it to generate all my passwords, so not one is the same.

You literally generate a password, click copy & close and paste it twice into the website you're signing up to :)

It also has different card types so you can enter credit card details, driving license details, serial numbers etc.
