What to do. Gym v's Home Gym

I've been a member of a gym for nearly a year which costs £30 per Month. I'm not getting there as much as I'd like to, mainly due to being tired after work. Initially it was great as the gym is only 3 miles from where I work however now I'd like to go home, have dinner and hit the gym around 7:30pm. This would mean a 25 mile round trip as I'd be driving from home.

I tend to only use weights at the gym so have been thinking about investing in some equipment I can use in the garage, then getting my cardio from running, cycling and some swimming.

Has anyone done the switch? If so how did you find it?
 
I've done the switch. I much prefer working out at home. I don't have to wait for equipment, listen to crap music and put up with annoying people.

I only ever did weights and a bit of rowing at the gym. I do miss the rowing though, no room in my cellar for a machine.

You do need to spend quite a lot of money to get a good home gym set up though.
 
I do feel rushed at the gym as there's always someone waiting to use the weights I'm using.

I'm not sure I've got this rose tinted vision of a home gym but it does appeal to me.

The money wouldn't be a problem as such. I'm paying out £360 a year for the gym. Home equipment will last years so the initial investment would be worth it. I'd have no problem buying second hand either.

Yeah, there is that. A mate may be interested so we could do the heavier stuff when we're both available.
 
The initial set up costs will be quite expensive and you need a fair bit of space for it but if you are going to do it then there is no point doing it "on the cheap" as you'll probably find that you will simply need to replace equipment if it is substandard. Ultra_Extreme would be a good man to ask or search for the posts of, I believe he has his own gym setup and he learned the hard way that if you don't buy quality initially that it will require replacing so costs you more in the long run.

I don't think home gyms would work for everyone but if an open gym isn't working for you and you can afford the cost then trying it for yourself wouldn't be a bad idea, worst case scenario you can sell the equipment on and hopefully won't lose much money. Do be careful though if you won't have someone to spot you on heavy lifts though.
 
Tired after work? :/ Besides it's better to eat dinner after the gym anyway. Seems a bit silly to give up on what sounds like a good setup.

Yeah. I've not been sleeping very well for Months so by the time it's 5pm I'm ready for home. However after dinner I feel I could tackle the gym. I've addressed my sleeping problem and have slightly better control with ony a couple of nights being crap. This does have a knock on effect though :(

It may sounds silly however it's better than pauying £30 a month and only going a couple of times.

I'm annoyed I don't go as much as I used to but tiredness really kills my motication.
 
We're all tired come the afternoon but you have to dig deep - once youget the blood pumping I'm sure you'll re-gain some motivation. Grab a coffee and a something like a banana or something like that to give you a kick - it's hard work after a 10-12hr day but I'm sure with a bit of effort you should be able to do it. :) £30 a month isn't a lot for gym membership. You have to ask yourself how motivated you'd be to do it at home, and would you feel happy/safe pushing yourself - as I know I wouldn't without a spotter.
 
Of course I'm right. You've got to just do it. Focus on the energy you get when you're there. Think of the feeling you get when you're at the gym. And think once you get home you can then chill out and veg out and not worry about going out again. Once I get home I find it hard to have the motivation to go out again so I *have* to go after work on my way home. It's in your head you need to push yourself to go.
 
just before you leave work....very strong cup of black coffe...get in the car...get some kickass tunes on and by the time you get to the gym ...youll be motivated! Works for me.
 
you are in the wrong place in your mind ot be working out at home.

you will get home, sit down, relax, have tea then find that you are too full or too tired to work out.
the gear wouldnt get used.

sort your sleep out and sort your diet out, that will give you energy to go through the day and then onto a gym session.
 
I can only echo the above, if you struggle to motivate yourself to go to the gym on the way home then I guarantee that when you get home (after the initial couple of weeks honeymoon with the new equipment) you will decide to watch tv as your tired etc.
 
I disagree with the above, I've been working out at home for over 6months now and it's not a chore at all if you can choose exactly when to do it and not have to waste time travelling.
I know I wouldn't kept excersizing this long if I had to drive 25 miles or que up and waste money on overpriced refreshments.

Neither the above poster or I are saying that its a bad idea for everyone. but for the OP it is clearly wrong. Its good that you can work out at home, it clearly works for you as it does many many other people.
 
I'm gonna give myself a mental kick in the right direction and see how I get on. As the days get longer I think my motivation will increase as I never had a problem during the summer.

He doesn't have to drive 25 miles, it's 3 miles on his way home from work, so it's logical and sensible. Why pay for overpriced refreshements when you can just prepare your own or bring a bottle of water from home or the office? I don't get your point.

If I could train from home I would, but going to gym also motivates me and also it helps having people around you to help push myself. Training at home is a good complement to a gym IMO.
 
Could you not hit the gym before work?

I get up at 6 and do an quick 16 miles on the road bike before heading home to shower, eat breakfast and head to work.
