I have just bought myself a lovely i7 rig. But only with a wd caviar 320gb hard drive which is too slow for my liking.

I want a solid state drive but im already in dept with my parents. So money is short!

In may its my birthday and i will upgrade either to sli on my gtx 280 or get a ssd.

Or i could sell my pc and downgrade to a phenom II and have enough spare cash for a ssd??

What do you think?

Or how could a teenager make easy money from what ive got!:D

well my hd footage i want to load quicker in video editing and things. MAybe raid 0 is the option.

Ive got a wd caviar blue right now and that give about 85 avrg read and 105 burst. Does that sound good?

Also ive been looking for some ICH10 intel sata drivers but i cant find them anywhere.

Could someone try to send a link.

I'm looking to upgrade this summer personally and move over to I7 then when ddr3 becomes a bit more mainstream and prices come down. One of the major objectives for me is to build a machine capable of HD editing as well, but I think even late summer SSD drive prices are still going to be too high for what I would consider worth it. They are nearly affordable but capacity is always going to be so low compared to normal sata drives for atleast another year I feel. Raid 0 with a couple of good terabyte drives gives 10 times as much storage at the same price. I'm sure I read somewhere though that for HD encoding etc, it's sometimes better to have a good fast drive for read, and a fast one for writes. You could get 4 x sata raptors and create two raid 0 arrays for this but Im not sure when it gets pointless and where the bottleneck is as I haven't got into encoding/decoding HD at all yet.

I would like to hear some input in the ssd vs sata 2 raid array debate. Without going to research..cough.. google I wouldn't have putt ssd in the same class as the faster sata raid setups I imagined there primary benefit is yes reasonable speed but also very light weight and physical size for notebook instalation, but as always I could be wrong :P

same as above i would get a veliciraptor or even a WD black drive which is faster... but the raptor would be the bigger increase maybe even 2 and RAID them..

Forget the raptor. Get an SSD.

(as long as you're prepared to tinker with it slightly to make it work properly, and dont need a massive OS drive)

for video stuff no point in SSD's go for the Seagate 1.5TB's in raid0 with 2 drives you will get about 220mb read and 150mb write they are fast cheap and massive.

with SSD's its too much cost for large setup/space unless you got money to burn I tested it with 8x 60gb Apex on a Adaptec 5805 even tho each drive has near 200mb read i maxed at 1.2GB/s and about 750mb/s write, would really want to drop £1600+ for that setup and only have 480gb?

BTW, I got the above 8x Apex drives for friends and myself and just had to raid them up :) at the end I even sold my own ones £155 a pop is too much atm
