Need a nice bottle of wine for friday. So an internet purchase might be tricky given the time frame. I might be able to get to a Majestic wine store.

unsure of red or white. So if you could Recommend both.

thank you

What it's for
A present. So it doesn't matter if it's red or white, or what it is to go with.

I have no idea the person's taste, just that they are loaded and LOVE wine and have a temperature controlled cellar, so they know their stuff. I was hoping one of you would as well so that you could guide me to a wine that would be well received.

It is not for a particular meal or anything like that.

But if I was to pick areas for the wine to be from - South Africa or New Zealand, purely because I have been there so it's a good conversational point.

I ended up getting...
I got a 2004 Tane, from Valle dell'Acate

I think you might need to provide a little more information! What do you like? Is to to go with a meal, what food?

Turn the computer off, drive to the nearest wine or alcohol specialist, every town has one and SPEAK to them.

London should be full of them, I know of a couple in a small town like mine.

Red, White?

Whats the occasion? Drinking it with food, if so what?

Majestic won't be much use to you if you only want one bottle, I think the minimum purchase is a case.

Seconded. There's tons of great places in london, I can recommend Lea & Sandeman if you are near any of their stores.

dude you're in london, go to one of the many wine stores here.

Try Berry Bros & Rudd: they do their own sub £30 stuff which is meant to be ok.
Try going to Nicolas and asking.

Suggest what kinds you like and we might be able to help you mate :)

Such a generic question. As said, go and chat to some local wine merchants. Even some Wine Racks are ok, or Nicolas.

For a generic decent choice that appeals to women drinkers as well as men (i.e. most women prefer white wine) - go for a Sancerre, about £15 a bottle. If you're spending £30 on a bottle alone, consider a bottle of champers if on special offer.

If red, consider a Chateauneuf Du Pape Syrah (a.k.a. Shiraz) - a very full bodied red that works well with steak and gamey meats.

The internet making people dumb since birth.

Says you... I love it and buy a case every year :)

If you like it then you should try something Hawks Bay or, if you can get hold of it from Bibendum, something by Huia. They really are excellent NZ vinos, red and white. Cloudy bay is nice, but I don't think it's as good as they charge.

Cloudy Bay in general is very popular in restaurants in The City and as a result it's price has been inflated above that of similar wines.

If you are after a good white for fish/ light meat, try and hunt down a bottle of Les Folastries, it's made from the Gewurztraminer grape, which does fantastically in cooler climates (It's from Alsace). Even the 2007 is very very good.

It has wonderful undertones of lychee and an almost- appley taste... extremely drinkable. Me and the GF shared a bottle at Maze a couple of weeks ago.

You should be able to find it for around £16 a bottle. It is much better than any £30-£40 whites I have tried.

as opposed some wine that you need to make yourself and bottle for a bit? rofl
classic rossyl :p

what wine you want could be defined by the reason for drinking. is it just a bottle of wine for wine sake, is it a bottle to impress the woman, is it to go with food (if so what?)
