core i7 920 - occt question

I had my first quick attempt at overclocking the cpu..
Everything was running fine, played a bit of far cry 2 and everything stable at 3400..

I ran OCCT and its telling me there was an error in core #1.. (after 47mins the screen went black)

Any idea if this is anything to worry about?

I started using the pdf guide which is based on the EX58-Extreme but a lot of the bios setting are similar..

Blck - 170
Qpi Link Speed - x36
Uncore - 13 (or maybe 12, cant remember!)

Mem Multi - 6.0

Load Line calibration - Enabled
CPU Vcore - 1.40000

Everything else auto

Gigabyte UD4P
Core 17 920
Noctua cooler
6Gb Corsair PC3-10666 (1333)
Ati 4850

Been tweaking it and trying a few other stress testing apps..

Does SuperPi work on Vista 64? I did an 1M and it was fine but wont work at all now, even after resetting overclock to stock speeds.. Alo tried HyperPi, same thing - crashes.

Try upping the vcore to 1.3

I havent done this yet, will do shortly..

Tried running Superpi at stock and it crashes straight away. Do I have a dodgy cpu!!?

Could it have something to do with my ram timings - the motherboard incorrectly sets them as 7-7-7-20 when they are specced at 9-9-9-24 so I manually changed them in the bios. Everything else is untouched but I thought maybe its also set voltages or something else incorrectly...

Is this possible?

You might laugh when I say this but

SuperPI crashes under Vista 64 with Audio services enabled.

Google it and they are loads of pages discussing this and disabling the audio service before running superPI.

I thought I had a dodgy E2180 when this first happened; it worked for about 20 runs and then it started crashing. Windows would say it needs to close it. NO matter what versino of SuperPI i tried it happened. Tried the fix, and it works every time.

It crashed on my E2180, E2140, E6600, Q6600, and my brand new Q9650 with the audio service on.

Thanks for that. It seems you are indeed correct! I turned off the audio service as well as themes and have just run superpi 1M twice, no crashing. now just need to figure out how to get the beast overclocked past 3Ghz!

Ive changed only the Blck to 145 and vcore to 1.3, left turbo on and superpi is still behaving itself! With turbo on, it does go over 3Ghz when running superpi. There seems to be mixed opinions on whether it should be left on or not - more research needed I think.

Does everything here look normal?

What Vcore are you using? You say 1.4v in the OP, but you say 1.3v later on.

What QPI voltage are you using?

Have you disabled spread spectrum?

Vcore is currentrly 1.3v.
QPI was left to auto.
Im not sure about speed spectrum - cant remember seeing that but will have a look. Should this be enabled in general?

I suspect that VCore was originally on AUTO and the board set 1.4V all by itself.

The other confusion here is that this is a Gigabyte BIOS and they don't have all the same options as other manufacturers.

I originally set the VCore to 1.4v because I was following the Gigabyte written guide on how to get to 4GHz. I don't even want to get to 4GHz tbh so I wasn't really on the right track and should be starting from scratch and taking it slowly. :p

I've got a blck of 145 now with VCore of 1.3 and everything seems stable even with everything else on auto (although I need to run prime this evening).

I'll keep notching it up in stages and see how I get on and also see if I can find others using the same motherboard or the UD5 who can advise on bios configurations.
