**EMPIRE TOTAL WAR**

I'm getting 20-30 fps in the land battle with the components in my sig. When I boost the unit sizes to 150 for line inf and 50 for cav it goes as low as 16 fps. Still playable but worrying for the main game where i'd hope to have battles featuring twice that number. I'd been holding off on the i7 because it'd mean almost an entire new system but now that there's finally a reason... think i might go for the quick fix of a 285 to tide me over.

Yeeah Reiver the GTS is definately slowing you down imo... the game flies at max with my 4870. If I were you though i'd get a GTX285 and just go for a Yorkdale-based Quad and OC the shizz out of it rather than upgrade to i7. The difference isn't that much at all really.

How does this game run on everybody's computer? I only have an E6600 clocked at 3ghz, 4gb of corsair dominator 1066mhz ram and an 8800GTX and I was a bit concerned that the scale and quality of this game might mean I struggle to run it at reasonable settings. I'm not looking to run it at very high detail but would like to get as much out of it as I can. Am really looking forward to this, need to get home and download the demo now! :)

just upgrade to a 4870 if you can mate, i have an almost identical rig (your ram is faster than mine) and all runs smooth on Ultra

I think many people thought this game would defo need a 4870+ to play smooth but it seems like they have made it well for all.

Would a 4870x2 be over kill for this game at 1920 x 1200 ?

Ok so it takes about an hour to load but once it does I can run it full detail 2048x1152 2xAA (don't need any more on my screen) 16xAF and it's smooth.

Not sure I like the demo that much, seemed a bit clunky? I remember the earlier TW games being amazing when I first played them but this just doesn't give me that feeling. :(

Am I the only one who really doesnt rate this?

I hate the way when I try move groups of units together they end up spread all over the map. Its slow, but doesnt seem to have the depth needed to create the tension needed with its slower pace.

Learn how to use formations and how to setup your troops properly. This ain't an arcade game where you can have 1'000 people standing in the same 10m2.

Did you play the first couple of games thoroughly then? Empire will be a very, very deep game, it expands on all the orignal things and adds more. But it's meant to focus on realism, therefore a lot of people won't find that 'fun'. :)

I looked around endlessly for formation settings/options, with no joy - No manual with a demo of course doesnt help.

I didnt. I have MTW2 somewhere, but never played it for some reason. I was really looking forward to Empire, and was hoping for a very, very deep and engaging strategy game - Judging from the demo, Im going to be left wanting.

There's a formations botton at the top right of the HUD. I don't think you're going to be left wanting in terms of the game having no strategy, I think you may be the one leaving the game wanting until you learn how to play it (genuinely no offence intended). It seems obvious that you've never played a Total War game before, and you're bound to be confused until you play the full thing and appreciate what goes into it.

Played around with gfx settings and can now play it fine with AA.

Sea battles are fine with
All on high except shadows ( medium). Textures on ultra.
No DoF/SSAO.
1920x1080.
2x msaa.

it was the water details at ultra slowing the game for me.

Yet to try land battles but I find land battles boring.

Cheers, i think that's what i'll do.

The difference between the units is morale, reload speed, effictiveness in melee etc. The Highlanders do better in a bayonet fight, the guards in a stand up fight. If you right click on the unit cards in the UI (can't remember if you have to be paused to do so but i was) you get a unit info window that breaks down their stats and explains their uses.
