EVGA superclocked GTX 260 B grade

The thing is I've read in a few other forums that it's common for the GTX 260 (actually the whole GT200 series) to make this sound when rendering high fps (in the 800-5000 region), so in apps like ATITool and F@H that render frames in the 1000's. Apparently it comes down to capacitor whine.

I was on the verge of returning the card when I saw the scratches, but the problem is that if I do then I won't find another card as cheap as this and in the end I'll be losing out. I was thinking of keeping an eye on it for the next 2 weeks to make sure nothing goes wrong. Unless you know of any other places where I can go for a similar price?

I am however wary of OCUK's stock and their policy on selling on what's been returned. I had a similar problem last year with OCUK, I went through 4 Logitech G25 steering wheels within a month and returned them all as they came with scratches all over the pedals and gearbox, and worn-out leather on the wheels. Am I on their black-list or something??

With high end graphics cards is quite common for various parts to make high pitched noises under stress, it's usually the capacitors but can be other parts as well. Some cards don't make these noises and some people can't hear them anyways due to the range of their hearing.

As your card was sealed it's highly likely the scratches were done at the factory, nothing to do with OcUK. If it bothers you that much, return it, but it's unlikely they will have stock so you may just get a refund and it's a great price we all paid.

Not to bring up an old thread but I gave it a week to see if everything went alright, which is has. So I thought I'd finally register it with EVGA, but it's serial has already been used. So this IS a used card that overclockers sent me...what do I do?

I would suggest contacting OcUK. I did think that this may be the case, maybe OcUK used a box cellophane wrapping machine, or they went back to EVGA.

Going through this thread again I noticed you actually put screens up with your serial number on, you can't hold OCUK responsible for a registered card when you have done that.

lol good point!

On a side note I've bought a few things from Ocuk and not all have been plain sailing. All I can say is their customer service has been top notch and I wouldn't put them down as a company to pull funny tricks like that.

Ah b*llocks, looks like I screwed myself over. I've edited my post, mind getting rid of the link to that image from your post just in case?

I'll get in contact with them on Monday, hopefully we can get this resolved :)

Well I just got off the phone to EVGA Germany, they said that the card was registered before and since it's got scratches and has already been registered, I can't register it under my name. Which means no extended warranty, no trading up, no support, and a second-hand card...great -_-

You tried contacting OcUK? They advertised it with a 10 year warranty so I'm sure they would do something to help.

Yeah just got off the phone to them, they told me to use the online form for an RMA; if they have stock of any more (which I don't think they would) then I'll get a replacement, otherwise a refund. Shame, since this was a sweet deal until I found out it was second-hand.

Strange, what did they say? I'd be very suprised if it was actually 2nd hand and had been resealed. I suspect the scratches happened in the factory and a previous owner registered the product without opening it.

They asked if it had the original cellophane wrapping on it, which it did. Since it was wrapped properly they found it strange that it was registered beforehand, then just told me to RMA it. I asked what will be happening and if I'll be getting a replacement, then they told me I'll get a refund if they don't have any more in stock.

Whether it was used, scratched and resealed or just registered without being opened we'll never know, I would have kept the card if I were able to register it. What I'm wondering though is who would buy a card, register it and then return it?

An indecisive person? I expect someone purchased changed their mind and sent it back under the DSR.

It wouldn't be easy to reseal the box, you need a proper machine to put a plastic seal over the box and for it to look professional.

Good point. Either way I'd be willing to keep the card if I could have registered it, but it doesn't seem worth it if I can't get the warranty and trade-up. Since OCUK just told me to RMA it (guess there's nothing they can do wrt the extended warranty), guess there's no other option :(

Very happy chappy here

Sorry to hear you had problems with your 260 bargain. :(

I went for the standard Evga 260-216 (65nm) and it's been amazing compared to my old X1950X (amazingly much quieter!)

Mine was definately a new card and I managed to register it now without any issues.
