Hi all,

I went out for a meal on Valentines night to a pub.

We ordered 2x rounds of drinks, a starter (shared) and a main meal each.

I opened a tab to start with (£1 on tab to hold it open) and then paid at the end. When i paid, i noticed i'd actually paid for table 33 and not 32 which we were sat on (couple next to us), so i told the bar manager and he then re-did it on the computer, and i turned out i owed them an extra £3 odd.

I paid that, and thought nothing more of it.

Came home and a couple of says later i checked my bank statements online, and found that 3 transactions had gone out to them, one for the original £21 or so, another for £5 and then the one for £3 odd.

I didn't authorise the £5 transaction, nor do i have reciepts for it.

Could well be jumping the gun but my first impression is that someone has possibly added £4 on top of the original £1 tab, takent eh cash out of the till so it all adds up...

Anyway, where do i stand and how do i go about getting it back? I'm not so bothered about getting a fiver back, but wouldn't mind a free meal or something though...

Phil.

/edit - Yes, £5 does not seem much, but theft is theft :)

Without a leg? :) For the time it's worth hassling, I'd rather give a 5'er away tbh ! If you have anything itemised or a break down that would be your best place to start I'd imagine. Call the place in question and raise your concerns with them, they maybe able to help!

I guess you would be best off by asking the pub first, they may simply credit it back to your card if you ask civilly.

If they wont play ball then you could go through your credit card provider and refute that transaction.

Burger king once charged my card twice, when I got my statement I took it in to tell them and they said I could either write to head office and wait for a refund or I could just eat for free there and then

Before you go in all guns blazing, have you considered the following?

Is it worth the hassle over £5 (surely the time wasted would be that much if you charge at work)?
You sure that they won't spit in your food if you did get a free meal?
Are you pretty sure that you are going to "win", as in, apart from the bank statement, can you prove that it wasn't just an honest mistake (table 33 charged on yours), and that can you prove you didn't order another £5 of drinks?

Bottomline is that if you are not bothered about the £5 back then its all about principles, then is it worth the time and hassle ?

Also, even though people say 'its only a fiver' need to think that if they did steal the £5 off his card, then how many others is it happening to?

Aslong as you got your statements I would take it up with the bar/manager

If you are going to do anything then do it quick, with no reciept or paperwork it will be hard to solve this if you delay it.

In regards to the amount, thats your money. If you are not watching your money then who is?

Eat "anything"? Or up to the value of :(

They just said eat for free, so I got XL bacon double cheese burger meal made super size and my girlfriend had a cheeseburger meal,

Considering I had only been charged for 2 angus meals originally I thought that was pretty sweet

Print off your statement and take it to them. It's only a fiver but it's the principle that counts.

I wouldn't eat there again for a bit though....

Also, you sure it's not one of those places that automatically charges you a tip?

Is the £5 for the drinks and the £21 for the food, some places have separate tills and staff to deal with both and this may be where the 2 charges came from so they could keep their tills balanced?

i was at the Goucho Grill off fleet street once and we paid for our share of the food which was about £60 or so and they took out two transactions totaling a lot more than that! we went back in and got it refunded. they didnt ask many questions either.
