AMD To Launch Radeon HD 48** "RV790" In April

The RV790 won't be faster than your card, if that is what you want to know. If they release a similar upgrade for the 4870X2, then that would be different, but what you have now is a top dog card (it and the current 4870X2).

Can't say I'm surprised in any way by the news of it being a simple clock speed increase. Pretty much what I said at the start of this thread :)

Yeah, nothing wrong with a refresh being the release of the same card clocked higher. As long as we don't see this same card released again..and again..and again ;)

hopefully well see some early reviews/benchmarks pop up midway through march n we'll have a nice surprise. i think id be happy to pay 200 for a card thats a little faster than the 260.

It's getting worse, now down to 850Mhz clock

Hopefully this will be smoke and mirrors and come April we will have a 1200 shader, 45nm, 512bit GDDR5 monster on our hands for £200 :D

If it has all the 900 shader units fully functional then it could still be an interesting card depending on price, GTX280 level performance for £200 would be nice even though it would lack some of the features.

Did the 2900/3870 have same core or was it a brand new chip?

New core - same processing elements, but had DirectX 10.1 support added, had a die shrink and so drew far less power (if you remember, the 2900 XT was notorious for power draw) and a smaller memory bus.

Does it matter if it's only a clock bump ?

20% claimed increase in performance warrents a different name to identify it.

The 4850 and 4870 have the same core clocked differently with different memory

As long as it's branded as a 4xxx card ... win ATI/AMD

If they brand it a 5xxx card ..... fail rebrand ATI/AMD

The 2900 did suck a lot of power for the performance but new cards consume more....

I now have a GTX280 which is a little :p quicker admittedly but sucks more juice....
