How about application support? Office 2007 won't run on Windows 2000, for example. It will only be a matter of time before hardware vendors don't write drivers for XP/2000.

There is something wrong with that statement somewhere. I mean come on, to get Windows 98 or so working on a modern computer it takes some competence

an unsupported OS before long becomes a hazzard to use due to security holes that remain unpatched by updates, though of course I'm sure they will be patching XP for many years to come.
take windows 95 for instance, you wouldn't dream of running it for day to day internet use, it would be a liability.
once MS pulls the plug most businesses will move on to other OS for this very reason.... even a 'competant' user can't use a PC in safety if the OS is full of holes.
it's always the same with progress though, you get die hards who swear by using out of date software (almost coz it's 'cool' to be seen to be different).. no doubt you were a late adopter of winXP from win98 ?
it's not 'cool' though, it's just stupid, life is VERY short, why waste your time using old stuff when you can have the latest and greatest, be it PC hardware or the OS / Software it runs. maybe it does nothing 'new' as such but you can guarantee it will make your life easier to use your PC if you learn the new ways MS have dreamt up to do things..
take the new w7 taskbar, it's a real step forward to making your PC easy and intuitive to use, though sticking with XP you'll never get to experience that
sorry to just pick random points here, i just find the whole group of people who won't move with the times abit silly tbh...
just my 2p, of course you can do as you wish, but when a company stop selling a product, it's because they usually have something far better to use instead.

2K is still getting patched.
My point is that by the time support is pulled, the user will most likely have already moved on for other reasons.

being a late adopter has it's advantages, but if you like bleeding / cutting edge PC tech then move with it when you can... the only time I ever regretted it was WinMe (but im sure that was a april fool by MS, it was aweful)
i love trying / using new OS, and being first to use it means i can then become a 'expert' when others wont have a scooby how it hangs together (good way to make money)
