Was thinking of picking up this cooler to replace my Zalman CNPS9500-NV, as the load temps peek into the 60C range with a clock speed of only 2.8 :(. New case is the CM HAF 932 and all my other temps EXCEPT CPU have dropped anything between 5-15C which is rather odd.

Anyway, Ive looked into fans for this and was looking at Yate loons and Noctuas but theres so many other 120mm fans with similar CFM and RPM's that im no longer really sure whats best, so any help on that?

2nd question would be, would i need a bolt thru kit or a backplate for my Asus M3A32-MVP ? My understanding is that i don't as the board has a metal backplate already...correct my if i am wrong please :)

I still need to measure it up so it fits, but i have to use the RAM slot closest to the CPU, which is rather tight
Config:

DIMM-A1 DIMM-B1 DIMM-A2 DIMM-B2
FILLED EMPTY FILLED EMPTY

Any help is appreciated :)

PS - I would like to get the clock speed upto around 3.2 if the MB keeps up, i have need to up the voltage from 1.3 ( Actual is 1.28 ) to 1.325 (Actual is 1.312), and thats only on a multipler change.

got it in one. which you get depends on your budget.

If you can't afford two noctuas, then go for two yate loons over one noctua. (one fan for each side, push-pull

)

Yea it does seem that the Noctuas are a little expensive compared to the Yates, If i bought Yate loons which would be the better buy out of a 38mm thick and 25mm? if they fit of course.

Do 2 fans really make that much difference? I have 1 Noctua NF-P12 Vortex installed and my temps are pretty good (69c highest core Prime95 Small FFTs at 3.6) and any reviews I've read say that it makes little difference.

My Phenom is nudging to 64-65C at 2.9 with Small FFTs in Prime

Seems stable so far at 2.9ghz with 1.312v - but its getting too hot to push much further...

I haven't really look into push pull setups much, also kinda why I posted here to find out what others have found ;)

I found a temp drop of 4-5'c when using 2 fans, i have 2 sharkoon silent eagle 2000 rpm fans on mine, loadtemps in p95 small fft of 68-68-62-62, q6600 @3.8ghz.

Yet another set of fans i have been looking at, are they actually that loud @ 2000rpm?

Overclock update - Windows froze out after 30 odd mins of Prime at 2.9ghz so it looks like its hungry for my volts :( - i dont wana up it much...

The noise of them isnt to bad when running full speed (i have 5 in total in my rig) all of them are run off a fan controler, so i dial them down when i dont need the extra cooling.

Hey mod1fied,

I believe any 120mm fan will be noisy at 2,000rpm, if not from the motor then the *whOOOOOsh* of air!

The Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000's 120mm are very *whOOshy* if left running at full whack, strangely I found these particular fans noisier or quieter depending on what heatsink they were attached too? It was too noisy for me when paired with a TRUE but seemed quieter when used with an old school XP-120!

I really must at least try one Noctua, everyone always speaks so highly about them but the price always put me off! :(

There is a bit of a whoosh from them at full whack:D I originally purchased them when trying to push my oc that bit higher (without using deltas) the fan controller helps to tame them though, down to a level of noise which is better than the yate loon 1200 rpm fans i had in my case and 2 arctic 400-1500 rpm pwm fans on the TRUE. Would also like to get the noctuas, but like you say theyre a bit pricey.

Yeah the Sharkoon SE 2000 120mm looked good on paper and I originally bought one to use with a Thermalright Ultra-120 hoping the motherboard could control the fanspeed, sadly it seems the ASUS CPU-Fan header only could do 4-Pin PWM style reduction so I was stuck with the fan at 2,000rpm!

Never could work out why the ASUS CPU-Fan header couldn't adjust a 3-pin fan's rpms but it could adjust 3-pin fans on the boards other 3-pin fan headers?

[Jan 2007] Thermalright Ultra 120 + Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 120mm . . . Too Noisy!

Heh, I love my younger days of clocking using both YS-tech and Delta *Monsters*! :p

Yep, the asus cpu fan header can be a bit of a curse in that respect, i originally had 2 arctic cooling pwm fans on the TRUE, both run off the cpu fan header in daisy chain config. They were great fans upto 3.6ghz, when i went to 3.8ghz my first attempt resulted in temps of 81'c on the 2 hottest cores, hence the change to the sharkoons. Im using a no frills akasa junior fan controller to run them at a lower speed, but due to its budget nature theres no way of reading fan speeds. so its quite literally play it by ear:D

Thanks for all the replies, I think i might get 1 or 2 sharkoons and use them on a fan controller. Now the next problem is this:

The Zalman 9500 is about 85mm from left to right in this picture, and there is only about 10mm gap between the very edge of the HSF and the RAM. Any ideas?

Because i have my doubts that a TRUE + a 120mm on the RAM side will fit...

Sorry for the poor res :(

I guess if i didnt have fins on this corsair RAM i wouldn't have this problem ....

sorry for slight hijack mod1fied, but was just about to post a simalar thread.

been looking at getting a true 120 with a couple of the noctua NF p12 fans in push/pull for my phenom. I understand the true only comes with one set of fan clips.

How easy is it to rig something to hold the second fan on?

or can you buy spare sets of clips?

Does it matter what side the fan goes on in a single fan setup? or will pushing the air be better than pulling it?

Other than that it seems water cooling is one of the only other options i have - and ive never used water before :)
