can't say I'm a massive fan of them, flash, especially direct flash like that, and live gigs don't work too well IMO.....much prefer to see the lighting that was intended!

also, lose the borders :p Why are they all random sizes too? they don't line up even next to each other :s

I started off with the 50mm but due to the lack of available light i was struggling to get 1/30s at iso3200, f/1.8. This would have been hard on a static subject, never mind someone moving about fast :p

I also haven't used direct flash. I was using the sb600 bounced at 90° with a stofen, using a mixture of normal flash and rear curtain. Most of these are at iso3200 WITH flash to get maximum ambient light and retain a decent shutter speed.

Borders are subjective i realise that, but i like them ;) Why does it matter that they don't line up? I didn't realise this was geometry

its not geometry no it just seems a bit weird for them to be so random :p

Would it perhaps have worked better to take advantage of CLS and get the flash off the camera then? Gel it a bit too to make it look more like ambient.
