Hi Guys,

I've just bought a i7 920 but its the dreaded 3838A775 batch, i've heard bad things about any 3838A's. And after spending £600 on my case and WC system i can return it.

However what are you guys getting OC and Volts wise on yours and what batches are they?

Its true that 38a's arn't producing great results for the most part I'm afraid. Then again you might be lucky.

whatt? i have a 3838A820 and im currently running it at 4Ghz stable on 1.34 volts (WITH the stock intel cooler). My temps wont go above 70 degrees. Maybe its the board that has made this possible - but if this is a bad batch then I couldnt imagine how far the others would go with the stock cooler and acceptable temps.

The 35A's tend to clock a little better on average. Looks like you were one of the lucky ones;).

Can i ask guys, does batch number and vid of a chip make much difference to how that particular chip will overclock, ive heard and read so many things about the 65nm cpu's (q6600's particularly) and certain batches, ie L737B iirc seem to be good clocking chips, with low vid's but ive heard they run a bit hotter, something im curious about.?:)

Mine arrived today, 38378387, so will try it when I get a waterblock bracket that fits

/sigh

Decided to use an air cooler, Akasa-867 and its currently running at 3.2 ghz

1.35125v 41 degrees idle stable prime 95 stress test no power saving or turbo enabled ram at 1600mhz

myself and another ocuk tech member both have a 3838b

we have both had 4.3 out of them on water
at around 1.4vcore

both retail chips

we noticed that the 38a chips tend to be hit and miss - some chips are brilliant and others are a real chore to clock

You dont need that vcore for only 3.2 ghz. Have you tried to lower it?

I bought a 3838A555 Dated: 7th Nov 08about 8 weeks ago, the highest clock I could manage was 3.0 Ghz.

I tried lowering the multi, using higher volts for what would be neccesary for 4 Ghz to no avail as well as lowering my memory timings etc, I'm sure it's the CPU.

Anyway yesterday I ordered a i7 920 from here, I recieved FPO/Batch #: 3838B080 Dated 17th Nov 08, hopefully I will have better success with this CPU.

Will report back later tonight, got to head back to work now.

3.8ghz, ht on, turbo + ss off @ 1.25v
nhu12p with 2x nfp12 fans @ 5v
The rest of my specs are in my sig and I still have yet to push for anything more than 3.8 as that's pretty toasty already with 8 way LinX.
