Lack of Lamb

Lamb is one of my favourites but it's too expensive to eat all the time. I tend to pick it up when it's reduced on the counter. I have some good cuts in the freezer, maybe I should dig them out this weekend...

Edit: it's out.

I had lamb at Le Gavroche on wednesday - OMG it was delicious! (best value lunch in London by the way £48 per head for three courses, plus two amuse bouche, pe**** fours, coffee, water and half bottle of decent wine each in perhaps London's best 2-star restaurant)

Fortunately one of my housemates is a chef in a restaurant in Smithfields and does the buying, so every couple of weeks he'll come home with some joint of meat, should be a nice full leg of lamb soon to pop on the BBQ :D

for the love of god, don't! we produce wonderful lamb in Britain why would you possibly need or want to buy newzealand lamb, you don't get the airmiles with the meals you know.

Three reasons:

(a) I can't remember the last time I saw British lamb on the shelves of my local supermarket
(b) NZ lamb is a superior product; I would still buy it even if British lamb was available
(c) If NZ lamb is already on the shelves, the air mileage is a fait accompli; I am not increasing it by purchasing foreign lamb, nor can I reduce it by purchasing British lamb

Lamb is probably my favourite meat of all. Rack, Saddle, Leg, Shank, Chops, Shoulder, the lot. Of course being in Wales does give me access to the best lamb in the world (insert your joke here!). I make curries, rissotto, stews, hotpot, Harrissa Spiced lamb with cous-cous, etc. In terms of flavour it's ahead of all other meats. I'd reccomend mutton as well. An even stronger and more robust taste.

Cow, Pig and Chicken is usually cheaper than Lamb in this country, simple as that.

Lamb is also my favourite meat, so this makes me :(.

Ah, Damm. I would have thought that wales would help keep the price down.

Down here it is Much Cheaper then Steak. For Example i bought some Chops(Quality) for $7 aud a Kilo down here from my butcher the other night and i dont think ive seen anything lamb go above $12 a kilo while Yearling Porterhouse Steak is around $22 a kilo.

Lamb is Great:D

Rubbish. Fresh Welsh mountain lamb will beat it every time. New Zealand lamb is popular in the UK because it's cheap. If you're on a budget, fine. But I prefer to pay the extra for quality (Or not, as occasionally the local farmer will sell to my Nan a whole lamb at a reasonable price!)

a) you're shopping in the wrong place - go to a butcher
b) just nonsense - absolutely wrong - no question
c) your logic is broken

Oh well. Why not just admit it's cheap and you don't care about where your food is sourced, british farming, flavour or the environment. :)

The kids don't fancy the idea of eating lamb, they see it as too fatty and they aren't sure about the taste. I might do something with a meal for one because I do like it and I haven't eaten it in a while.

Lamb shank for one ........ yum!

A patriot! Bless. :)

NZ lamb prices are usually on a par with the local British product; there is no significant difference between the two. NZ lamb also benefits from low-intensity farming, while British lamb is usually produced under high-density conditions. The impact on respective quality is obvious.

Nothing like a bit of subjectivism, eh? ;)

Oh really? Do tell.

I do care where my food is sourced, which is one of the reasons why my wife and I buy so many of our groceries from the local farm shop (it's this one, in case you're interested: www.hayheadfarm.co.uk). We use the supermarkets for products that the farm shop doesn't carry. :)

It did come across as a little partronising, especially with the 'bless' on the end. It could almost have been that you were implying he only felt british lamb was better because he was british, but you wouldn't do that would you?

For all the comments about fatty meat, you know you *can* cut the fat off you know ;)
