Who is exempt from wearing a seatbelt ?

I know taxi drivers and pregnent women are but who else ?

I ask as at work one of the other drivers where pulled into the office as one of the managers saw him out on the road doing deliveries in one of the works vans and saw him not wearing a seatbelt and gave him a final written warning .

Thanks Luke

In terms of the written warning, the legality or otherwise is nowhere near as important as the company policy on the matter.

GeX, those links refer to children and medical exemptions, rather than commercial vehicle exemptions.

not really, if you read them;

For adult passengers (14 years or over) the following exemption apply to the wearing of seatbelts
Hackney Carriage taxi drivers are exempt from wearing seat belts while on duty (whether they have a passenger or not). Private Hire taxi drivers are only exempt when carrying a fare paying passenger. They must wear a seat belt at all other times
Delivery drivers such as milk float drivers used to have an exemption from wearing a seat belt when conducting local deliveries, although since a change to the law in March 2005, the seat belt exemption for delivery drivers now only applies when travelling 50 metres or less between deliveries or collections
Emergency vehicle staff in certain circumstances
People holding a Medical Exemption Certificate (a seat belt Medical Exemption Certificate is only issued by a doctor)

Police National Legal Database said:
The exemptions to wearing a seatbelt are: -

* a person who has a medical certificate, which states that on medical grounds it is not advisable for them to wear a seatbelt (including for pregnancy).
* for drivers of vehicles performing manoeuvres which include reversing (three point turn) this includes a qualified driver supervising a learner driver performing manoeuvres including reversing.
* the users of vehicles which have been adapted for the use of delivery of goods or mail to consumers or addressees whilst engaged in making local rounds of deliveries (postman, milkman) as long as do not drive for more than 50 metres.
* a disabled person who is wearing a disabled person's belt.
* a person driving a vehicle for fire brigade or police purposes.
* a licensed taxi whilst on duty.
* a private hire driver whilst it is carrying passengers.
* a person driving under a trade licence whilst driving the vehicle investigating or fixing a mechanical fault.
* a person involved in a procession organised by or on behalf of the Crown.
* a person conducting a test of competence to drive if wearing a seatbelt would endanger himself or any other person.

Delivery drivers are not, they used to have a small exemption i.e. between very short journeys, but not anymore.

My uncle has had more fines than an asbo kid.

We've had drivers banned for life from delivering to certain sites before for not wearing their seatbelts. Some companies have very strict policy over this sort of thing!

why would you not wear one anyway? even if your going 100 yards, stick the seatbelt on, takes literally 2 seconds. Fair enough its been drummed into me to put a seatbelt on as soon as i get into any car, but it still just makes sense.

That is still correct.

I'll echo that.
Legality or not I still cannot understand why anyone wouldn't want to wear a belt.
Whenever I hear about "crackdowns" it amazes me how many people are caught - yesterday 22 were caught in a village not too far from me.

As many a policeman has said - "I've never unbuckled a corpse".
Saying that although people can and do die in car accidents, at the time they were unbuckled they were usually still alive and died later.

The "Private Hire drivers when they have passengers" - why for gods sake?
Why should they be any different to anyone else?
Some of these laws never cease to amaze me.

a lot of HGV drivers think its cool to not wear a seatbelt, little do they realize that in the event of a roll-over, the belt stops the driver getting thrown out of the cab!

Silly truckers.

i know on Ice Road Truckers they don't wear them, but they are driving on ice - and made a good point that if the ice brakes they need to get out as quickly as possible and it's not like they're going to hit anything on there, or even if they do it won't be at any great speed!!

After having first hand experience on how well seat belts work i find it almost immpossible to not wear one, The only time i dont is when i,m reversing and hanging out the door to see where i,m going.
Any passengers in my car wear a seatbelt wherever they sit, If they wont they walk. I have quite strong views seeing as i owe my life to a seatbelt..
