Since closing battlefield2 yesterday, my computer is having serious memory problems. I got a message saying something about not enough virtual memory and something to do with pagefiling.

Today I keep getting an error saying 'Could not read from memory' and it looks as though the pc is in safe mode as it's only loading the basic windows interface.

Any ideas?

virtual memory and pagefiling are to do with windows using HDD space to boost memory, so its more a HDD problem than a memory problem. Is your HDD nearly full? that could cause it, if so try deleting some stuff, you dont really want to be more than 80% full. Other thing is when it crashed it could have caused a corruption, try running chkdsk/scandsk/defrag see if they throw up any errors

Just tried to access my HD and it won't let me, it's around 90% full. It gives me the virtual memory paging file error again so it does look like it's to do with what you've said. I'll try deleting some stuff and trying again.

Cheers for the help.

Ok, I've cleared up my HD and removed Battlefield 2 which I suspect was causing the problem. I've run CHKDSK and let that do its thing but I'm still having problems.

Hardly anything will load, I can't access my HD and I'm still getting the 'Memory could not be 'read'' error.

Any ideas?

I've now checked what programs are using up all the virtual memory but there doesn't seem to be anything untoward. I've also increased the virtual memory by 3x which has made no difference.

Really struggling with what could be causing it now, would greatly appreciate your ideas.

RAM gone bad, disk faulty, Windows corrupt. Could be any one of those and more so you'll have to go through the checks one by one. Start with the hardware first, use MemTest to check your RAM, use HD Tune to check for bad sectors (or the manufacturers Utility from their website). Set any overclock back to stock while checking. If that all checks ok then move on to the Windows installation - maybe try a 'repair install' (an option offered from the CD). Look in the Device Manager to see if there are any yellow warning indicators, look in Event Viewer for clues to stuff not working properly.

Well it seems to be a pretty clever virus that I've managed to get somehow.

It won't let me acces my hd, won't let me run any virus scanners, it redirects me to random web pages when I click on any links from google. It also won't let me download and virus scanners. I've tried to download NOD32, Kapersky, AVG and the windows defender but it just won't let me.

Hopefully a reformat will sort it out.

Yep, that'll do it
