160kg Woman Forced to pay for second Seat

Not to be offensive, but I wouldn't particularly look forward to being sat next to her on an economy flight. No way man, you need your space when you're up in the clouds.

Benneh rules in favor of the airline, seriously big people must buy 2 seats.

With that argument though, sports people put a lot of strain on the NHS too, injuries, physio etc. I know ive got a long long list of sports injuries.

I think if you take up more than one sit you should pay for another. Doesnt matter why. Dont like it dont fly, take the bus etc. Of course would never happen could turn into a PR nightmare for whatever company did it

Sports people will generally be on private health care, not the NHS. Also sports people probably buy 2 seats on a plane (or just fly business/1st class)

Overall rule should be that if you take up more than one economy seat then either buy 2 or buy one business/upgraded seat thats bigger

Seems fair to me. Harsh - but fair.
Luckily I've never had to sit next to someone massive on a plane, but it is bad enough on buses and coaches.
There isn't really an ideal solution though. It wouldn't be fair to stop people using planes and other forms of transport. But it isn't fair on others to end up having even less space than they would do normally on a jet.

not weighing in here (haha) but i don't think they just mean high paid professional sports people.

I'm pretty sure, if you look at the statistics, that the entire cost of a sporty lifestyle vs the cost to the NHS of an unhealthy lifestyle (e.g. obesity, alcohol or smoking) the gap between the two would be vast.
Which way?

Edit - I know a few alcoholics (recovering thankfully), loads of smokers and more fat people than is probably healthy! Not one of them (that I know of) has been to the NHS for anything relating to their conditions. And they range from 17-70.

I know 4 or 5 sportsman, including a cricketer, squash player and footballer - at amateur and semi-pro levels. They have been in and out of hospital for surgery, physio and what not many, many times.

ok, if you are a 160kg IT expert who dabbles in the odd game of hockey, then yes i think you should still have to pay for obesity help from the NHS.

This would be generally a good idea for any obese people, certain checkups and ways of lowering or stopping pay towards fat tax could be done, which would in turn make the person live longer.

what a hideous site im surprised the plane could take off with that weight :p

does this mean that my skinny m8 will get concessions for weighing less on the plane? , if not i call discrimnation against fat and skinny people :p

Smokers have to stand outside to prevent inflicting the negative effects of their habit on the rest of society. Are you suggesting we do the same for fat people?

It's got nothing to do with the Operators caring about other peoples comfort. Aircraft have weight limits, and believe it or not, the more load a plane is carrying, the more fuel it uses ... i.e it costs more to fly a fatty. It's the same reason your luggage is weighed and you might have to pay a weight penalty.
Your ticket price is calculated from the Operators costs based on an average person. If you're fat, their costs go up, so your costs go up.

They don't charge less for underweight adults because it's not good business sense since nobody is demanding it thanks to their "other peoples comfort" excuse.

Medical conditions, genetic predispositions, medication.

While it is true that some medicine can cause weight gain, and some medical contions, and some genetic predispositions, they are all a very small minority, and to my experience, none that cause that degree of obesity. The kind of obesity in the OP is primarily down to a sedentary lifestyle with incredibly poor diet. So unless she has even claimed to have any of those unlikely reasons that she would be that fat, she has no grounds for complaint, and I don't see why anyone is defending her.

That may be the case in your personal experience. But trust me, a larger proportion of people who are in hospital are fat and/or old and/or smokers, than are sportsmen and women. Seeing as you can't stop getting old, the least one could do for oneself is stop getting fat, and stop smoking.

Michael O'Leary from Ryanair was on the beeb this morning, and was asked about exactly this. He argued that the avg. weight of the passengers didn't amount to very much all told.

That said, I find it very hard to have sympathy for our larger brothers and sisters these days. So many people have gorged themselves to such a disgraceful degree - especially in light of so much good data to the contrary!

If yer-wun is going to take up two seats, she should pay for two seats - what I'm surprised about is the fact that she's willing to make a federal case about this and plead for sympathy?!!

I totally agree that fat people should have to stand outside... ALL THE TIME!
