160kg Woman Forced to pay for second Seat

imagine being in between 2 people like that on an economy flight for 12 hours. It just wouldn't work.

I would like larger seats for all but it isn't cost effective so this is the better option.

In fact I would be happy if a persons weight was taken into account when calculating baggage allowance.

You wouldnt be between two people like that. You just ask to be moved.

Good to hear, i had to sit next to a fat spanish woman all the way to las angeles last year and every time she BREATHED she knocked me, everytime she moved she knocked me and never ever apologised and would look at me weird like it was my fault.... o im sorry your obese, its obviously my mistake.

The problem is the motivation.

The airlines have said that the actual weight isnt really an issue..Most people that have a problem with fat people on planes are annoyed at the inconvenience of sitting next to a porker. Thats fair enough..

but where do you draw the line?

I fly a lot and there are endless inconveniences on planes..Not just fatties.

Tall people often spread their legs into the isle and into the legspace of the person next to them.

People with bad hygiene are absolutely disgusting to sit next to. Id take a fat person touching my arm over a dude that stinks of BO or pee anyday.

Babies...enough said.

Annoying kids

Old people who have to get up 800 times during the course of the flight due to failing bladders and the like.

Loud people.

Obnoxious people

Drunks.

There are so many annoyances on flights. Who gets to decide what gets charged extra and what doesnt? Having someone encroach upon your arm rest is not the worst kind of inconvenience.

I would support all of the above having to pay extra if fatties do....IF it is based on inconvenience. If it is based on fuel consumption then its another matter.

It is more than annoying though, some people cannot physically fit into a seat. So either their blubber spreads onto the next persons seat or they have to have 2.

you can buy earplugs for loud people/babies. perfume for smelly people but if someone's belly is rubbing against your face it is another league of discomfort imo.

The problem is, a drunk person could sober up, a baby will rarely cry for X hours straight and the noise from that or anything else could be massively cut down with some super high quality ear plugs, you can ask a tall guy trying to give his balls some space, to close his legs, you could arguably ask someone with bad BO to go spray some aftershave on himself in the bathroom(to be fair even generally unhygienic people will make an effort for a long flight).

But you can't ask a fat person to suddenly be thin and not lean across your sit, thats where in the difference lies. Almost everything else can be dealt with but someones size can not.

As for medical reasoning for being fat, theres incredibly few medications that ACTUALLY cause you to gain weight and arent' simply used as an excuse.

If a few people put on a few pounds in a study it might make it into the uncommon side effects listing, it doesn't mean anyone would gain 100kg due to it.

Glandular problems aswell, if you put on 10kg and can't find a single logical reason for it you'd be down the doctors and within a few months at most you'd be treated, maybe cured but almost certainly have it under control. I'm not sure theres a single possible medical condition or medication that can cause you anything but small amount of weight gain. Once those are identified they can be dealt with and assuming you weren't putting on weight by just eating like a complete pig, then you wouldn't gain more weight and having not been a pig probably find it quite easy to lose weight again also.

The difference is people who find any old excuse, the fact someone put on 50kg, went on medication for depression, put on another 10kg then read their medication could cause weight gain...... suddenly all the weight gain is down to the medication.

Comparing being a fatty to alcoholism is about as ridiculous it gets, in terms of justifying it anyway. Alcoholism, just like almost anything else in this namby pamby world we live in is just a bunch of drunks fighting for acceptance in the real world. you know what, don't drink to excess every night to start with, if you do end up doing that, stop, then get the hell over yourself. Basically the same that can be said to obese people.

As for people being celebrated for being obese, I'm not sure anyone, ever, has been.

A king who is obese might be celebrated, and people might say they love how he looks, but thats respecting(or fearing) the position and saying what he wants to hear, not that you love the fact the guys fat. What nonsense.

If you're going to make someone sitting in the seat next to you completely uncomftable and unhappy, the seat should be paid for by you.

To be perfectly honest, if I was going on a flight to say Australia and as a heavy guy who is not at all heavy enough that I lean over the next seat, I'd happily pay more to be guarenteed a seat in a row of guarenteed "non fatty's in that row seats" so I knew I'd be comftable on a long journey. Surely a ridiculously fat person will be more comftable themselves, when they aren't spending the entire journey with their boob flopping over and wobbling about all over someone next to them.

THe main issue is this chick (used loosely) seems to think she should just get the second seat free?

Their blubber may push against your arm or something but unless you have personal space issues (in which case you shouldnt be in cattle class anyway) then its not that much of a problem.

How do you feel about tall people who put their legs into other peoples leg room?

and earplugs mean i cant do anything while im on the plane. I cant use any forms of aural entertainment. Headphones do not cut out the sound of a screaming baby.

Smelling perfume is just as bad as smelling BO...i just want normal air.

and you can ask a fat person to move. there are always seats free on planes..always..if its THAT bad then you, or they, can move. You can also ask them to hold their stomach back. If they put their arm on the armrest, the belly is held back.

All the examples listed are things ive experienced myself. They are not uncommon. I have also been seated next to very fat people. I wonder how many of those who are so angry about this can say the same

No, consuming more calories than you burn make you fat. End of.

What about people with sugar disease or similar, although I agree your own fault if you're a fatty and don't stop eating when you notice your wight is going up, but afaik some people really can't lose weight.

As they should.

Their choice to be fat, why should we suffer?

ok, so you sit next to someone with broad shoulders, you'll be in same position, and it's not "their choice" as you put it.... i'm 6'6, and suffer purely from that, broad accross the shoulders, but the person next to me is gonna be as uncomfortable as I am.

So the airline should lose out on an extra seat which = extra income because of a Fat Person needing two seats?!

If they require two seats they have to pay for two! Deal with it!

This is an interesting debate. You see I'm 6ft 8 and 21 stone. I'm not fat, but I am a 'big' guy - I used to row competitively, and I have the typical rugby player build as I'm sure the people who have seen me will attest to. I cannot simply cut my legs off to save space. But I always have issues on flights due to the lack of room - so where I can I reserve the exit seats or pay for an upgrade.

Should I be made to pay for 2 seats too?

I think this is inherently unfair. If people are fat through choice, then so be it, but how on earth can you substantiate that?

I thought the biggest issue she's complaining about is that they totally messed her around?

It's fairly clear that she knew and enquired about the 2-seat policy and was told repeatedly not to worry. THEN last-minute they force the 2nd seat upon her anyway AND THEN they don't even put the 2nd seat next to her!! I mean, come on.

After making the initial booking on January 15, she claims she was then told twice on January 18 by Jetstar not to worry about paying for a second fare because "we can get around the policy of charging a big person for two seats".

"I was told by Jetstar to phone the night before my flight to book excess luggage and not to worry about paying for the second seat," Ms Scafe told The Cairns Post yesterday.

"Then on Saturday, they advised me to book and pay for a second seat for other people’s comfort because of my size … and, would you believe, they then made a further mistake which I later noticed on the web by splitting up my seats so they weren’t next to each other."

You will find that most people in here will say its ok because thats just your build. Most people simply dislike fat people and that comes across in this discussion.
