Aim to use purchace a card for gaming, at a resolution of 1440x900. Current budget is around £100.

What do you guys suggest? If you can recommend another card, then you're welcome to :)

Thanks for your suggestion.

They look pretty big for type of card i'm looking for. I'd prefer a single-slot solution. My tower's pretty clogged on the inside [I have a small, but thick, grey wire running through the middle of 2 PCI-Express ports :S].

Don't assume the OCUK 9600GT is a single slot gpu as per the photo. My 9600GT is dual slot and looks like this.

Might be worth contacting OCUK before you press buy to confirm its single slot. That said I would get this 9800GT over the 9600GT. It has 112 stream processors vs 64 stream processors on the 9600GT, looks like miles better value in my opinion.

It's definately worth going for the 4850 or 9800GTX+, but if you really want a single slot card, then that Zotac 9800GT is great @ £85.

8800GT or 9800GT don't even consider the 9600 when you have those options for 1440x they give solid performance.

Yeah, like others have said, if you cant stretch to a 9800GTX+/4850, that Zotac 9800GT is the one to go for.

Thanks for your replies guys:)

I asked a representative about that Zotac GeForce 9800 GT 512MB and as it transpires it is also a Dual-Slot card,

this one to be exact:
LINK REMOVED  :(

Yeah its for advice but competitor links are banned by the forum rules as this forum is after all related to one shop specifically...

and with that I have duly removed the link, everyone happy? :)

Back on-point. what do yews recommend now?

A change of attitude maybe?

The guys were only giving you a heads up mate, no need to get all arsey.

Back on topic...

Most 4850's are single slot cards... probably worth ringing the shop to enquire about the xfx 4850 jak731 linked you to, as £112 is not a bad price at all.

Attitude? :p meh, not worth arguing :)

Anyway, a general search reveals that this too, is indeed a dual-slot card.. I'm sorry guys, if this is getting annoying :(

For the £85 price bracket I'd be looking at a 4830, there are plenty of single slot cards in those available, just not at OcUK.

If you can stretch a little further however, then the 4850 is the way go deffo fella, again plenty of single slot solutions available with a little homework.

Performance wise they are both plenty faster than a 8800GT or 9800GT and as a result will scale better in the future and last longer to the next required upgrade.

At his resolution of 1440 x 900 the OP doesnt need to spend £110 or the price of a 4850 for decent performance. Plus the 9800GT will handle Crysis Warhead better than the 4830 and is also better at folding, according to Custom PC magazine.

The latest Custom PC magazine has an excellent Labs test this month on good mid range cards.
