IP35 PRO XE still a viable budget option?

Sorry guys, I'm working my way up and down the forum trying to work out the best spec for me, so here I am again :D

I'm upgrading my woefully old socket A machine on a budget, and in a recent spec thread the combination of an E5200 and a P5Q PRO was suggested. Whilst that board has everything I need, I'm wondering if it is a bit OTT really. There'll be very little gaming involved, so I don't really need the Crossfire, but I do need Firewire and RAID.

I know the Abit IP35 PRO XE is getting on a bit now, but it's still miles ahead of my current NF7-S and has everything I need and more. I've read all about Abit shutting up shop (so to speak), but as a fan of their products, and given the ridiculously low price they can be had for atm, is it still worth a punt?

Cheers in advance :)

good board but with Abit down the tubes i wouldn't have a lot of faith in the support area should things go wrong.

it's mature so isn't going to need BIOS support.
abit have said that they will support existing mobos for warranty period & the 1st year is down to the retailer anyway.

Thanks for that, £55 will be a decent saving on my budget. Mind you, I'll probably spend the money on something else instead :D

To be honest the possible lack of support was the only thing concerning me, but I've had 7 faultless Abit boards so far, so I suppose I shouldn't be too worried.

nice to clock on

ocuk still use them in a lot of the builds as they are a good - reliable board and easy to troubleshoot

for a budget board - you cant go far wrong

IP35 Pro XE and an E5200 you say?

Based on how much my IP35 Pro XE loves my E5200 I'd definitely recommend one.:)

Abit IP35 Pro XE is a very good board! I use to have one and theyre rock solid! Only concern would be lack of support now Abit are out the market. With an E5200 aswell you wont come close to the maxium FSB supported (1600) so there would be no point in a P5Q PRO at all. My previous E8400 didnt require any voltage increases on the board even at 430FSB. Theyre probably good for over 450. So even if you decided to upgrade to an E8XXX cpu these higher-end P35 boards only become bottlenecks on the normal multipler with chips that can clock a fair bit over 4Ghz imo. So Id recommend buying one.

Nice one p4radox!

I'm long past all that faffing about for big overclocks myself, but it's great to see what's possible with a good chip (or an exceptional one in your case).

Thanks for the other comments guys. Looks like I'd better get one ordered before it's something else they run out of stock of :)
